To all those who have swapped their automatic transmission for a standard if you have your old auto. tranny gathering dust or ready for the dumpster there is a part I would like to buy from you. I have a '72 coupe.

Its called the speedometer drive. Its the part where the speedometer cable is attached to the transmission. In the first picture, at 1'oclock to the black cable is a bolt. It holds the speedo cable and the 'cylinder' in the tranny. Once this bolt is out, the cable can be pulled and the part I need can be taken out with a slightly angled screwdriver or allen key.

Here are some pictures of what I need. Its #1 in the parts picture.

The tranny fluid was leaking. It seemed to come from both the sleeve/cylinder and the center where the speedo cable is attached.

If you look at the third picture you'll see a grey 'band'. This covers a rubber seal (#1 in the picture next to the sleeve). This is gasket silicone and my attempt to stop the leak. The rubber gasket is NLA.

This seemed to have fixed the leak around the sleeve. There is also a small leak from the center where the cable is attached. To stop this leak I would need #2 in the picture. it is also a rubber gasket but its encased in a metal band. I tried to fix it by inserting another seal but there is still a very small leak. Nothing critical but annoying.

Since this smaller seal is somewhat difficult to remove from the sleeve, I might as well replace the whole unit.

Hope this helps.

speedo drive leak

Hi, I just fixed one for one of my customers, the small seal ( # 2) is NLA but I ordered one from a local seal house, they could not come up with the corect thickness of the original seal, they could only get a much thinner one so I got 2 and doubled them up. Used an o ring from my o ring collection and put it all together. No more leaking. When I was a mechanic at the dealership, this was a fairly common problem but then we could still get the parts.

I have seen them stuffed with all sorts of different silcones and sealers, trust me, none of those will work. You need to replace the inner seal and o ring. Getting a complete used one will probably just result in the same leak within a very short time.

Not a hard job to do, pretty easy.

Good luck

Thanks, Rick

I fixed the transmission leak I had and posted what I did under General Discussions.

I am still interested in buying the complete speedo drive unit if someone has one.
