See if CK has them they are specific for the wider 74 frame rail. Actually @golfbavaria has a set.

Because my car is a 74, I have a round opening in my car, not the slots. I'm envisioning an adapter that is round on one end and a flat blade with the appropriate bends to accommodate the early pumpers. If I'm lucky enough the early bar end would fit inside the later tube end.

Regardless, you will want to weld in metal to close up the openings. Shane’s will bolt to outside of frame rail, just need to drill two holes on each frame rail. Fifteen years ago someone had the round adapters you mention but I have not seen them in a long time.
That sounds manageable.
The maker of those passed away years ago.
Mine were custom fabricated, I asked if he wanted to do a run of them and he just said, "if the price is right." That means at least $550 a set I think but he sounded like he wasn't really interested in doing that. There is a market out there for anyone interested I think, IDK?

That is an elegant solution. Similar to the kits you can buy to convert 74-76 2002s to euro bumpers.
Don't think there is a demand for e9s since it's only 74s that had big bumpers.
When I did the conversion 5 years ago I bought brackets from Coupe King. I took photos and measurements.

NO, the rear bumpers bolt onto a flange on the rear valance. no idea about the best way to do the conversion from '74 to '72 rears.
Yeah, just like mine but I couldn't figure out how to get them through along the frame rail without having to cut through original valance and I didn't want to do that. Not only that, it doesn't look good with the old round holes from the '74 and they would need to have a cover plate of some sort and match paint to make it aesthetically pleasing. Seemed like a lot of work.

What is the difference betwen the 15.125 and the 15.5 dimension? What is the length of the short leg? I will draw this up in Fusion 360 to document this.
The difference is because the bend is not quite 90 degrees. Yes, @Nachtycoupe is correct. I had to carefully trim the openings about 1/4" to allow the brackets to slide in on the outer side of the frame rails.
Rear bumper is a bit easier to mount. Holes for the early style bumpers are there you just need to pop out the plugs that fill them. You'll have to deal with the three large holes left in the valance from the big bumper shocks.

Here is my educated guess
Just buy Shane’s for $200. 
That is the plan. Waiting on payment instructions
I agree with Chris. $200 is a great price. I paid more from CK and it was worth it.
