Hi all,
I'm interested in building a CS or CSi frame-off restomod, or buying a restored original CSL that is well-documented.
I think my preference is the former but I'm open. Any help finding the right car to start this process is appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob

the restored original CSL ... i presume you mean a true CSL. not to parse words too much, but restored original is in conflict with each other. assuming that you mean true CSL, that has been restored ... do you mean restored to original condition or do you want a true CSL that has been restored, but has some tasteful modifications?

for instance, our forum friend @Keshav has a gorgeous tundra CSL with a better than original engine ... its in Germany, and its priced to match its beautiful condition. the current range of restored CSL range from about 250k to 500k, depending on whether is a street pack car, a true lightweight, a carb CSL or a BAT 1 or BAT 2.

looking forward to seeing where you go. i can tell you that building a slight CS restomod is a lot of fun. even if the restomod portions are mosty performance based, engine, suspension, transmission, interior, wheels, leaving the body as beautiful as it is ... perhaps picking the colors that you really want. this option might take a few years to find the car and do the work. this approach might cost you 100k to 175k depending on what you start with and what your decisions are. even though you want to take a car down to bare metal ... buy the most rust-free body that you can find. Since you are in Toronto, there are 2 excellent restoration specialists somewhat close to you - the Werk Shop in Illinois and VSR in New Hampshire ... VSR is an excellent recommendation for CSL restoration as well as restomod work.

hope to read soon about where you go with your pursuit. please be sure to read the FAQ section to learn about common rust spots and other informative subjects that will expedite your learning about these cars.

Yes my mistake.. true CSL that has been restored. I'm fine with tasteful mods. I've actually been in discussion with Keshav. His car is stunning!
I've heard of VSL but not the other. I think there's a shop Total Motor Werkes up here that I would consider. Anybody heard of them?
I too am curious to see where I end up.

don't know of them, but i don't know much about Canadian businesses. what i can tell you is that VSR does work to a very high level of accuracy as well as a lot of work on e30 m3 street and race cars. they also have done amazing work on many forum member's coupes. the Werk shop is probably the best known restoration shop for vintage bmw's. if you are going the CSL route and want a great car, the knowledge, details + experience matter ... you want somebody with impeccable track record / credentials
