I currently have a very good stainless steel one, I'm guessing, with the fog light hole that is perfectly adequate for Sixto but a chromed metal one would make the rear view even more stunning. Don't make me have to take out a loan to pay for this.
Calling Germany, Europe?

Still looking for this. Got an offer from Europe but lots of unknowns and expensive. Any offers or leads appreciated. May have to stick with what I have.

Uh, stainless steel ?
I think only 2 types exist: Anodized alu and chromed brass. Never seen or heard about stainless.

If you tap it with a finger, does it sound thin?
If yours is 600 grams, it is brass. If its below 200 grams, its alu. If you have it in your hand, you can guess easily what you have based on the weight.

I'd check it before possibly buying an identical piece.

David, are you talking about the lights or the license plate lights? MVP doesn't make the panel between the taillights ... at least not on their website.

he has the aluminum one ... i asked him earlier in a DM
 
@eriknetherlands you are 100% right and I was wrong. Mine is Alu and in very good shape but seeing the chrome ones made me think it looks better matching up with the chrome on the tail lights.
I promise not to make any more egregious mistakes. Must say this is better than a “bump”.

Got it! I'll keep my eyes open.

On a picture, in an add, the difference is very hard to tell.
The one clue is the angle and depth of the 3 circular depression / recesses for the screw. They are slightly different for the brass vs alu version.

In person and up close I think there's a big difference. The chrome just pops versus the aluminum. My guess is that chrome became a scarce commodity because of the South Africa embargo, the major world source for chrome, so BMW switched to Aluminium (England spelling).

I never understood the alum ones from an esthetic standpoint, given the rear light bezels and bumper are chrome, I never understood the alum emblems either for the same reason. Perhaps BMW started to consider cost.

Surely cost. The e9 was bloody expensive when it came out.
Quite a few parts were downgraded from chromed brass to aluminium.
The ones you mention, but also the shiny part in the door jamb, vertical section where the latch sits on top, was chromed brass in the 2000cs.
Hood grilles also existed in chromed metal, perhaps the sides as well.

However it also made e9 lighter :-)
 
The maximum od savings was in 2.5CS... no electric window motors in front and solid windows at the back. Also no horns under the rear bumper. ;-)
