Wtb limited slip diff

There were 3.64 and 3.45 open side loader differentials listed on eBay today. IF you want either of those ratios, you can probably find a LSD unit to install. Search for bmw 3.0 cs differential to find them.

Open diff crown wheels are 8-hole mounting vs 10-hole mounting for LSD. Made the same mistake myself.

No, as per above comment. Count the crown wheel mounting hole numbers on the LSD diff unit. The crown wheel on the open diff will have 8 mounting holes.

ae

thats not the case
the unit for sale specifically was from a 6 series and has a ten bolt crown wheel

The LSD unit that Dave is selling won't fit in a side loader.
Read his fitment guide.

OK just paid attention and noted the later 10-hole medium case diff unit! Comparing apples with pears!

If anyone knows of a 10 hole 3.45, 3.64 or 3.91 sideloader matching crown wheel and pinion set i would be very interested.

To confuse things further (sideloader), there are also low drag (low friction) crown wheels with narrow gears - ok for road use but questionable for a high power motor.

What is your experience/knowledge with the 188mm unit. As per above and after a number of years searching i cannot find enough sideloader LSD crown wheels i need in the ratios stated (@10 hole). I have been told that the later medium case diff may fit in the sideloader case with some machining. I have not got around to buying one as yet to try - might just end up as as expensive pointless exercise. My gearbox/diff man also thinks it may work having measured the unit/case... but there is no better experience than having actually tried/found someone whom has done this.

I can't deviate away from the sideloader case.

Big bucks now.
3 versions
Early with bolt on flanges
Middle with non threaded flanges
Late with threaded flanges
2 different versions- 8 and 10 bolt

A good price now is 2000 bucks
That's cleaned, inspected rebuilt and sealed and new bearings

Good luck with machining.

Just plain used is 500-800

The ones on eBay are nuts

Sorry, noob here.

Crown mounting?

Is that the # of bolts shown here?

above is an 8-bolt, right? so that's non-LSD?

This is what I heard from a 2002 site:

"early e9 sideloader LSD had an 8 bolt fixing, and this is what you need to track down to build an LSD with a shorter ratio.
The later 10 bolt fixing LSD as found in the e12 and early e24 can only be used with the taller 3.07 ratio as there are no 10 bolt sideloader gear sets in shorter ratios. "

I was in place for a limited slip but havent heard back from them in a while.
hope its still available
if not are there any 3:91 out there can i just get anyone and have it redone like that
KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED HOPING ITS NOT GONE.

given how much $$ we invest into these cars, my recommendation would be to contact Mario at VSR1, and have him rebuild an LSD for you with your choice of gear ratio. The cost would not be significantly higher than buying an unknown unit and having it completely rebuilt + the cost of LSD insert. And, you would get a superior differential that can take abuse and will last the life of the car. I believe he has donor diffs on the shelf for people who want to do this.
