One of our members IIRC located a perfect replacement but it is a dark gray.

I bought some from McMaster-Carr on the recommendation of some forum members, including two posts from @rsporsche here and here. It is black and not gray though.
My plan is to paint both the taillight holders and the gasket with an appropriate color of SEM gray, although I haven't gotten around to it yet. Something to keep in your back pocket in case you strike out on finding gray.

good question. my reply: because I would know it was there and it wasn't how it looked from BMW.
I do think the idea of spraying the black material grey has strong merit. I might pick up a can of Grey vinyl paint and try that. Thanks for chiming in!

i don't have the gray gaskets for the light cover. i have the gray / white gaskets for the outer lens. i have the black ones for the light covers. i was going to use the SEM storm gray color coat on them. sorry for the delay in trying to find them.
