thanks for the info everyone.
Have sent requests to all mentioned above.
Peter said 'they are yours if you want to come pull them off the car' He is a busy man, I am sure, and can't justify a trip to Austin for a set of struts alone.
hummm....South by Southwest Music festival is coming up though!

The e9 and e3 shared struts 31 31 1 110 805/806. Struts 31 31 1 111 981/982 were used on the e3 starting with the Model 74 3.0 Bav and includes the 3.0S and Si. These are the struts with the longer control arms and tension struts as the camber of the spindle changed. You can use them but only with the later arms and rods.

Late E3 strut on the left - the included angle from the c/l of the tube to the c/l of the spindle is about 96.5°, same as an E12 strut.
Early E3 strut on the right - the included angle from the c/l of the tube to the c/l of the spindle is about 93.5°.
If you put the late E3 strut or an E12 strut on your early E3 or E9 you will have to account for about 3° more positive camber.
If you look closely you will see that the left spindle would create more positive camber than the right one.
