I see from the wiring diagram that the positive side of the coil is fed by 2 wires - one from the starter (black/red) during cranking and another from what appears to be from one of the speed relays (green feeding the resistor, blue/red from the resistor to the coil). I can't see from the diagram where the current comes from to feed the relay before going on to the ballast resistor. I want to eliminate the relays entirely and wire directly but can't figure this out. Any experts out there with an explanation? TIA.

Hi Steve - I have my wiring diagram in front of me; power for the speed relay comes off a junction at the ballast resistor, through a connector plug and off the powered side of fuse number 6. The speed relay and solenoid valves are all powered from this same wire. The diagram shows a connector between the ballast resistor and the speed replays which not only includes the power wire, but also includes the ground and the wire running to the number 1 terminal on the coil. It looks like you can disconnect this connector and pull the entire circuit including the solenoids if you like.

My wiring diagram (1972) only shows one green wire at the ballast resistor but in reality like you said there are two - one to feed the speed relays and one delivering 12v to the ballast. I see that I had already removed the wire harness from the speed relays so obviously they have no effect on ignition.

What I did realize is that I had confused which side of the ballast resistor has the lower voltage - it is the side with the blue/red wire not the double green wires (obvious now from my newfound understanding of the diagram). I had been running my fuel pump and 123 Ignition off of the resisted side (11.25v) instead of the full side (12.5v) which I had intended to do - doh!! Now all corrected and distributor and fuel pump getting full voltage.

Sometimes it's good to check this **** out from time to time to verify correct wiring!
