Inner door panel chrome

Couldn't the above solid aluminium strip from speedway motors be used to remake the original ones? I do not privatly own a lathe, but using the aluminium bar, one could mill off half the height of the profile, while still leaving a dome every 15 cm or so that could be drilled to accept a normal metric M3 or M4 bolt? The dome would pass through the doorpanel, and hold a screw/bolt from behind, perhaps with a few washers, could work just fine. Are there 4 pieces in total in an E9, or 6? I think its rougly 4 hours of labour, and you'd still need to buy the stock material. Roughly 250 euro/car? Costly business.
Benefit of using solid stock material is that any end style can be ground easily by hand to match, and it's strong enough to withstand dents.

Wasn't Stan looking into reproducing them?

Erik

I measured my newly deanodized, polished and chromed piece thickness, and it was roughly 3/16” so these alternatives are only 1/16 or so thicker . But the profile is much smoother curves lathe Work you mentioned can be done to smooth over the profile curve!

You are correct! There are 6 pieces per car two on each door and two for the rear. Most cars are missing one or two from the doors. I am currently missing the smaller (top) trim on driver’s door. Earlier I was missing three of four front doors. And the replacement I found for the passenger door has screw holes on the ends which for now I live with until I have a better solution..
You are correct Erick , there was a member that had found a manufature to reproduce them but needed a minimum quantity commitment to make a fiat batch.

I was and still am but haven't had any luck at this point.

Here in the USA a lathe is for parts with are symmetric about a rotations axis. What you are referring to is a milking machine, which is used to make linear cuts (and others). When I looked into the manufacture of these strips the 2 processes recommended to me were
(1) a die which reforms strip-stock into the desired cross sectional profile as the strip is forced theu the die. But you need a second process to form the ends
(2) a custom tool to cut the profile into solid bar-stock. Again a secondary operation is required to creat the ends.

Any operation involving cutting solid bar stock will also need a finishing step to smooth and polish away the machining marks.

Hello all,
For sale on behalf of an associate, 4 used door card trim pieces that he would like to offer.

2 for the rear panels, L&R, and 2 of the shorter ones for the front, L&R. The longer front ones were unfortunately chopped to make place for speakers, common in the 80’s.
Since I havent seen them myself and will only be the middleman in this transaction, please look at the pics carefully.
As per the seller they are in good shape and have no dents nor bends. A good clean up and a polish job is needed.
Price including shipping to the US is 200€.
He also has some unmolested door panels. I’ve asked for details.
If interested, please pm me.

Is any door chrome strip from E3, E12 etc. a suitable replacement for the front lower E9 strip? Maybe even taken from a rear panel.
I'm looking for one and don't mind if the length is a little bit too short/long or if the end parts are somewhat different. Maybe it is even possible to shorten a too long strip?
