i have a question ... i was going to buy a new cap and the ones i have seen on real oem are for also 635. my memory is that there was a different cap for a 2800cs and a 3.0cs ... one was vented and one was not. anybody remember which is which. i did a quick search on the forum but couldn't find the information in looking on w+n, they sell one - part # 16111118379

WN 16111118379. That looks like my fuel cap, yes will fit a E24 & E28 as well. Not sure about the vented vs not vented. May depend on the evaporation tank in the trunk under the parcel shelf, or a atmospheric vent on the filler neck like in my 2002 Tii.

Scott,
W/N has the standard type but take a look at this one. Needless to say, if it appeals to you I’ll do the needful.

thanks Keshav, i'm not going to worry about anybody siphoning gas from my car ,,, a regular cap will be fine for me. if anybody does it will just mean less time for the gas in my tank. gas is a little cheaper here perhaps than in Germany. i am paying about $2.75 / gallon for premium (93 octane)

Andrew, you might be correct, it might be the vented neck ... i am not sure which i have - will look when i go to the car ... but for some reason i think the 2800cs doesn't have a vented neck.

Non-vented fuel caps were introduced with fuel vapor recovery systems and other emissions controls. So in general, earlier cars would have vented caps, later cars non-vented. A vented cap will work OK on any car - you just may fail your emissions test. A non-vented cap on an early car can create a vacuum in the tank, making it difficult for the fuel pump to draw fuel.

My neck has a hole in it..................
Yes, the emission systems for the FI cars had a tube that went from the vapor tank next to the filler neck all the way to the engine and connected ??? to pull the gas vapors back into the engine.
Long since gone on my car and since mine has Weber side drafts, not needed.

I have obviously owned my Coupe too long. I am now at the point where the smallest, insignificant, see it once month or less, part creates a Holy Grail search. I have a beautiful(in my eyes)forever unlocked, locking gas cap(no key) that I just like the look of.

The one on W+N is the same as on my 72cs. And is exactly the same as the oil filler cap on my 1981

ford escort XR3 turbo alloy engine cover but without the bmw emblem. But il be swapping them over for when the escort is on display at the practical classic and restoration show at the National exhibition centre in March, just to mess with the heads of the ford purists. LOL

The "typical" D-Jet used on the majority of E9s did not employ vapor recovery and the filler neck was simply vented per the attached diagram. There are doubtlessly systems that have been fitted with vapor recovery/containment apparatus inspired by of fitted with parts from newer FI systems, e.g., the L-Jet. ;)

We pay €1.70+- per liter!

Well, let's do some math:

2.75 $/g x .244 g/l x .88 €/$ = .64 €/liter

So does that mean that Keshav paying 1.06€/l more for gasoline than rsporsche? Well no, crude oil costs pretty much the same worldwide. And I have to believe that Germany and the US are equally efficient about distilling gasoline from crude. So what accounts for that 1.06€/l difference? Taxes!

A little internet research shows that US Federal gasoline tax = $.184, while Georgia State taxes are $.316, a total of $.50/gallon. So the pre-tax cost of gasoline in Georgia is $2.75 - $.50 = $2.25. The tax rate would be .50/2.25 = 22%.

Assuming gasoline has the same pre-tax cost in Germany, $2.25/g works out to .48€/l. So the tax Keshav is paying must be 1.70€/l - .48€/l = 1.22 €/l. And his tax rate would be 1.22/.48 = 254%.

So, do you still believe that gasoline is cheaper in Georgia than in the Germany?

Infact it is the individual countries tax on crude oil that dictates the street price to within a couple of cents.
France had some serious riots recently partly because of the local price of (high octane) petrol nearly €2 per liter.
In Dubai a liter is 50 cents, crude oil costing the same on the int market.

Tax on gasoline is about 65% of the per liter price!

Yep and in Canada, at least here in the lower mainland of Vancouver, we pay from 1.28 / lt on a good day to 1.38 / lt on crappy days With a 30% difference in US to Canadian money, that works out to 1.79 / lt in US dollars X 3.8 lt to a US gallon = 6.80 gal in Canadian dollars Most of that is in local taxes.

There was only one standard gas cap for all models in the parts book, all are unvented as stated earlier.

Perhaps there is a tiny exception with regard to lockable caps designed and manufactured for vehicles not originally intended for sale in the US. On those caps, there was probably little consideration given to incidental venting, especially considering that the rest of the system was vented. Since the locking mechanism necessarily involves parts that move, thus requiring free play, they were probably never perfectly sealed. They most probably did a fair job containing liquid, but vapor maybe not so good. On two personal examples, squirting oil in the key opening can result in some weepage at the other end (interior) of the cap.
