my guess is that what you have there is the main lights’ switch,
weird to see it there as its normal position is 20cm up from there just under the dashboard’s grab rail

it is only a guess i made up from the shape of the alu box, but someone fitted the same kind of odometer reset knob to it to make things more difficult

BTW unknown type of fuse box there, probably not even bmw

Sorry the photo is not very good, but the switch is only ON/OFF switch, and was close to odometer reset. To use it you have to open the fuse compartment.

I had one of those switches too, I have weber carbs now, I wondered if it was a manual choke for the Zenith carbs.

i have never seen such a thing as manual choke for zeniths, not even for 2800cs, but being an on/off only, it might be to feed the choke solenoids in very cold weather conditions ?
Just a wild guess, I had a manual choke on my 72 fiat spider so I wondered if it were the case. It wasn't an on/off switch in the fiat so probably not.

Is this the switch you are asking about?...

If so, can you take a picture showing the number and the color of the wires connecting to it? Maybe the rear window defroster or 4 way flasher?

If it is not the one you are asking about, can you identify it somehow?

OK, so it's an electrical switch - not a choke cable pull - right?

And the fact that it's located behind the hood release / fuse box access door suggests that it's not something that you would switch while driving - probably not fog lights, rear window defrost, etc. I guess it could control an electrically-operated choke, but if it were me, I'd put that switch somewhere more accessible.

Do we agree that it is an add-on, and not factory installed?

Fuse box looks e3 or later 2002, there is no electrically operated choke. Does that plug behind it with red and black wires go to it? I wonder if it was a kill switch to interrupt the starter as I see a black wire.

Now my guess is that, those loose wires are colored the same as window wiring. Someone may have put that switch to cut off the window switches. 73s suppose to have the two separate breakers for the front and rear windows under the dash (if no breakers, then these wires are supposed to go to the fuse that is not the correct fuse box).
Long guess

My 71 2800cs has only one of buttons, I think it's factory, see the attached file.

wise deduction dear Jay,
not something you will switch during driving...exactly

but look at the holder, equal to the one for the odometer reset knob,
said that i recall i once sat my eyes on a lower dash piece that had not one but two holders in that same position

here we are looking to some factory option...maybe

Is not choke because the car comes with an injection engine.
Is on/off not accesible.

I was thinking the same thing. Hidden, not often used...
