Scott, for $8k I will build you a kit of what you need to change yours from a 4 to 5 speed OD conversion. I will even throw in instructions how to do the job.
I might even pull them from my car, perhaps I will try the dogleg afterwards. .
The first time I did this it was a bit tricky, but now I know what is needed it’s not so hard.
Parts are in the U.K., you pay shipping and any taxes.
While I appreciate the offer, I was only willing to pay $6k, knowing I was getting it from someone that was super reliable in this space and could resell the parts I didn't need, and pay shipping from California.

Seems like a lot of money. Think you can be better off:

- core 265 w/mech speedo (something the BAT kid doesn't include): $1300
- Metric Mechanic rebuild: $3000
- Driveshaft cut/re-balance: $300
- UUC short shifter/rod: $530
- COupeKing install mount (BAT kit, must cobble something yourself): $400
- Bellhousing: $250 (usually found cheaper)
- Clutch/plate: $300-$400
- New slave cyl: $150
- TO bearing: $50
- Guibo: $50

$6500.

You can shave $3000 from the MM rebuild if your core runs good.

Thanks Rob. I hat to be an idiot, but please let me know re: "You can shave $3000 from the MM rebuild if your core runs good."
My car runs fine, so assuming that my "core" runs good now, but not sure I follow completely, but if I can buy these parts for ~$3,000 and have my mechanic install, seems like a great deal.

$6500 - $3000 (MM rebuild) = $3500 if you want to take (I would) a chance that the used Getrag 265 "core" you find runs just fine.

No, your four-speed would not qualify as a "core."

Use that money saved for your mechanic to do the install.

Rob?
Rob?

Did you forget some things?

:)

pilot bearing
shift platform
shift blocks
knuckle
clips
teflon washers
fork lever
pivot
tank support
rubber bush
resurfaced flywheel
bell inspection cover
reservoir
hose to master
Steel hose to slave
powdercoating
master cylinder
tranny mount (rubber)
insulation
platform support
clip
new hardware
zinc hose standoff
zinc hose standoff
And more...

I will note that anyone who puts a 300 dollar 30/40/50 year old drive shaft in a $100.000.00 car......... deserves it.

I will gladly pay for 10 of those shift platforms at that price but I can’t…

unobtainium……

none to be had.

I will also gladly pay 2.95 for a steak and lobster dinner but……

you get the idea.

Ok, will ad my .02….

Does the seller state the trans is tested or rebuilt?
This along with the auctions for the seats and chrome bits last month have me shaking my head.

Looks like I am going to start digging I’m my stash…and quit selling individual parts for little money…..and figure out how to tap into this insanity.

Seems a MM 265 kit would be a better option if they still offer it.

Also, there are other trans available, maybe not with speedo but there are GPS options.

If I owned a CS street car, would certainly keep a 4 speed and change the diff to the easily found 3.25 gear. It is all about the gearing, right? Or maybe it is just being able to say, I have a 265…

Right now I have 4 265, 2 ZF 5 spd OD, 2 83/4 260, 2 86 up 260. Some are road tested….there is someone out there that emailed me about one recently, they are first.

Also am getting married next week so my response time is even worse than before….sorry.

easily found 3.25 gear

Note: Scott mentioned wanting better low end performance. A taller rear ratio goes in the other direction. He may not need a 5spd (back in the day these did cruise the autobahn at >80mph all day).

maybe Scott would be better off spending $8k ($6k 5spd kit plus labor) on a 3.5 liter B35 with a few torque boosting mods. Then he can think about a 3.25 diff ratioz

Let me help you with some math to convince senoir management at the other side of the dinner table :
At 8K, it would be about 6 USD per 1 less revolution per minute....
1 revolution / minute means that after doing 60 km's at 120 km/h , one would have saved 120x60x60 = 432.000 revolutions.

Now if you multiply that with the fuel saved due to less revolutions, 432.000x 0.006 cents/km, it becomes clear that one would save 60 euro's worth of fuel, making it pay back itself, even at 10K, in less then 3 months.

...
The revolutions per minute will not be televised...

I have been playing with mileage mostly on my E24. Found some odd facts:

1- My E24 has gone up to 22 MPG (from a historical 18 MPG)
2 - Driving mountain roads is more efficient than flat (I already digressed on that with my M5 measurements)
3 - Driving downhill in gear is more efficient than in neutral

1 - may be because it can read the prices at gas stations, or the rebuilt 4HP22 transmission with its own radiator to cool the ATF
2 - because uphill MPG is more than 1/2 the flat MPG, and the downhill is free
3 - Idle consumes more than shutting down the injectors to brake with the engine

Now the real reason for the 5-speed is that there is no cure for tinnitus. Silence is golden, got get that 5-speed
