@Wes - Please don't make it that simple. Haven't you learned? The circuitous, painful route is much preferred...
You are a funny man. For the record, I've embarked on my own E9 'Hero's'Journey' a couple of times that approach is par for the course. Alan's issue is easy to fix, if he wants it to be.
Give me a challenge, like trying to install the rubber boot that goes behind the fuel filler door, or trying to find RHD parts... :D

So I've heard... Nows about the time to increase your health insurance limits and lower the deductible... Keep me in the loop. What I lack in sympathy, I make up for with sarcasm ;)

JUST REREAD THE POST ABOVE FROM OCCOUPE AND WANTED TO CLEAR THINGS
UP. THE S38 IS BRAND NEW AND WAS BUILT BY AN OLD MAN THAT DID NOTHING
BUT REBUILD THOSE ENGINES. THE PERSON THAT BOUGHT ME THE ENGINE
INITIALLY IS GOING TO BUY THE S38 FOR THE 10K I PAID. AND ANOTHER 1K
FOR THE SNAKES, SO ILL HAVE THE 11K TO SEARCH OUT THE m30b3x THAT
OCCOUPE HAS TOLD ME TO BUY. SO ILL LOOK FOR ONE TODAY.
I DONT KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO DO THIS . YET ALL THE ADVICE HERE
IS ALL I NEED TO KNOW. I DONT KNOW THAT MUCH ABOUT THE ENGINE
NUMBERS. SO ILL LOOK IT UP AND GO WITH EVERYONE HERES ADVICE.
GET A RUNNING CAR AND REBUILT THAT ENGINE.
IVE REBUILT OVER 20 ENGINES, STARTED BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL IN 1964
WITH CHEVY 6'S THEN V8'S. THEN THE 2002 4 CYL. DID THAT ABOUT 10
TIMES AS I KEPT BLOWING THEM UP RACING EVERYWHERE.
FUN TIMES. SO I HAVE ALL THE EXPERIENCE I NEED TO REDO ONE OF THESE
TYPES. SO, TODAY I HAD TO PULL THE E46 FRONT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
AND CAT AS THERE IS LEAK SOMEWHERE. WAS GOING TO COAT THE
PIPES AT THE MANIFOLD WITH LAB METAL
BUT I THING ILL JUST HAVE THEM WELDED AT THE CONNECTION,
BACK TO THE ISSUE AGAIN . ILL START LOOKING FOR THE m30b3x
MICHAEL TOLD ME TO GET . I DONT KNOW WHAT ENGINE IS
SO ILL SEARCH IT OUT TODAY. WHAT A WONDERFUL THING IS THESE COMPUTERS AND
SEARCH ENGINES. WITHOUT THIS ID BE STUCK FOR EVER.
OK GOING TO YAHOO TO FIND THAT ENGINE NOW
ILL POST WHAT I FIND FOR DIRECTIONS ON WHAT TO DO NEXT
I THINK HO MATTER WHAT MOTOR I GET , ILL REBUILD IT.
I DONT WANT TO PUT IN AN ENGINE THAT GOING TO MORE
WORK IN A YEAR OR SO.
THATS WHY I WAS LOOKING FOR ONE ALL READY REBUILT.
AS THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME FOR AN ENGINE INSTALL.
LIKE MICHAEL'S OCCOUPE'S BEAUTIFUL UNIT.
AS YOU KNOW MY CAR HAS BEEN REBUILT FROM THE
NAKED BODY UP.AND EVERYTHING IS BRAND NEW.
SO WILL BE THE MOTOR,
GOING TO THE SEARCH ENGINE NOW

Wait what?

Don’t buy a whole running car if you plan to rebuild the motor. If you are rebuilding the motor then just buy a motor and rebuild it. The whole point of buying a complete car is to find a used motor in good working condition,

Next up, you seem to imply with your 20 motor history that you intend to rebuild yourself. No offense, but I think that is a bad idea. You can buy a B35 for $1,500
or less, but have it rebuilt professionally!!!

I’ve been on the hunt for you and there
are very free e32 and e34’s on the market under $5K. A testament to the m30, many of these cars are pushing 250k on the highway odometer.

This is the best deal I’ve seen so far for a functional e34 535i. $2K with transmission issues. It’s an auto but he describes as a “sticky clutch”. I asked for more details, but he said it is still available. Likely due to living in BFE (near Eureka). What I like about this one is the mileage and the price.

Again, the point is to *NOT rebuild the motor for at least a few years.

Alan,

You might check with Metric Mechanic (in Missouri). They've rebuilt (and increased size/power) on a lot of BMW engines/transmissions for over 30 years, I think. They had done both on the 3.8+ liter 5 speed OD I had for several years. It was motronic FI engine and ran beautifully. They might have an excellent engine for sale.
