FS 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL

Seems to be this car:

i was under the impression that bat 1s had the 2 vertical rear wing, not the 3 vertical ... thought that was part of the bat 2. what say you people who might know? paging @BMW Pete

Third support was added during production of the last 57 Bats only. City pack trunk torsion bars, ten hole Alpinas, wrong valve cover, yellow zinc hose clamps and trunk latch, a few too many other yellow zinc bits. Coupeking restored his Schwarz CSi with a 3.5 I think.

if i remember correctly, the Bat1 + 2 had city pack trunk torsion bars to hold up the trunk lid with the wing. i think i remember seeing that on Pete's bat 2.

With no info on the restoration (as stated in the auction) and being sold on a Bill of Sale (no registration) coupled with the somewhat weak recent BaT record on these cars recently (and E9's in general) - I am not holding my breath on this car doing well. I hope it does - but, I am not expecting it.....

I personally can’t quite get over the opening sales statement by the selling party for a
$1/2 million car.

Maybe he just ordered a sandwich while he was writing the copy….

“BMW’s 3.0 CSL (the “L” meaning “Lightweight”) was a pure-bread homologated race car built for the public.”

I know I like rye bread on my pastrami sandwiches….

He claims it's got Glaverbel glass front and rear which I've never heard of. I've asked for pics...

The bats had steel trunk lids to support the wing forces so I believe they have the torsion bars but please correct me if I'm wrong...

I was thinking the same thing...

Dangit Don, now I am going to have to search out a Pastrami on Rye out here and this is not NY, hard to find, very elusive, like a Batmobile.

i have seen bats that had torsion bars and those that did not. my belief is that the bats had a steel lid and torsion bars. our friend @BMW Pete has a beautiful bat 2 that has torsion bars on the trunk. i thought i had a pic of the hook in the center, but i don't. my understanding is that all steel trunk lids had the torsion bar hook.

here is an aluminum trunk lid from a carb car w/o torsion bars - notice that there is not a hook at the bottom of the lid (for the torsion bar)

here is a 2275 car - non bat with aluminum trunk, no torsion bar hook

here is a bat2 with no torsion bars, but the torsion bar hook

here is a 3.0cs with steel trunk + torsion bar - look at the hook in the center

isn't Glaverbel glass the thinner glass windshields used in the CSL or is it a thinner replacement glass? i have heard of it but haven't focused on it to know which is correct. perhaps some of our CSL friends can take some pics of the temper stamps on their glass.

Something rubs me the wrong way about this car. Maybe it's the presentation by the guys at C&B's (while they are well meaning - IMO they are a bit out of their element) or the vibe the seller has.... Can't really put my finger on it.
I guess it all started going downhill for me when the seller, while admitting they don't have any documentation on the restoration, tries to say the car 'speaks for itself'.
Yeah - that may be true - but with no history available on the restoration - the car is speaking like a guard dog with a muzzle over its snout.

Will be interesting to see where this one ends up.

Glaverbel is the original thin glass windshield. Same manufacturer as made the thin glass front and rear for the lightweight (non-touring) 73 Porsche 911 RS. You can reference the comments on the red carb CSL that recently sold on Bat that caused such a stir with the CSL cognocenti...

while a true analogy, probably has a much different intent than what the seller, stumbling over his own 2 feet, is trying to say. Arde, your's is probably more truthful.
