Simply put - Tom is an e9 hero.
Always effective and hardworking.
Saving us in the states every week from parts hell.

I’m meeting him in Germany in a few weeks.

Anyone want to buy him a beer?

Do the math- late H1 low beam only lamps (flat lens) are 450.00 a set. With Tom you get all 4 lamps and rebuilt buckets for almost the same price.

I have a question for the hive mind here.. The above photos show the Hella headlamp LENSES, and at least the upper one is marked "H4". However the H4 BULB is a dual filament bulb, and the H1 is a single filament bulb.

If you use the H1 bulb in the H1 lens, then presumably the H1 set would be located in the inner position, otherwise the low beams would be inner only, which seems weird. In this setup, the high beams are H4-High outer, and H1-high inner, which provides no low beam infill in high beam mode, and is likely to blind all oncoming drivers... Or is the idea here that the H4 lens creates the infill using the H4 high filament?

You can go though the various combinations, but it seems like the only other viable setup (which makes no sense from a labeling perspective) would be to use the H1 lenses in the outer position using the H4 hi/low bulb, and use the H4 lenses with a lower wattage H1 bulb in the inner position. This provides some projected low beams in the low beam mode, and in high beam mode provides for good projection of the H4 high beam filaments in the outer position, while providing good infill from the H1 filaments in the inner H4 lenses. This is how the setup I provided the diagram above for works.

What is the proper setup here?

A lamp/lens marked H4 will not accommodate an H1 bulb, the bases are very different. A euro coupe uses a different high beam stalk to activate high and low and on high lights up all four H1 bulbs. On a US coupe when High is selected only the 60w filament lights on the H4 bulb along with the H1 inner lamp. The euro H1 outer lamp uses a different lens than the H4. You can adapt a US stalk to utilize the euro four H1 configuration by jumping two wires which I documented here somewhere. The H4 bulb never illuminates both filaments.

Chris is correct about the h1 bulb not fitting in the h4 fixture ... and even if you found a way to do it, the lens will not work well with the h1 bulb.

having just have worked on the lighting wiring harness on a USA 2800cs, which is the same as the pre '74 - 3.0cs, the yellow wire comes from the light switch and powers the low beam (55w filament). the white / purple wire comes from the high-beam relay and goes to the 60w filament on the h4 bulb then transfers over to the h1 bulb ... so when the stalk activates the high beam, it turns off the 55w filament and illuminates the 60w filament and the h1 bulb on the inner light.

the euro coupe runs a single wire to the h1 low beam (outer) lights and 1 wire for the city light. on the high beam lights (one for the h1 bulb). in the euro coupe, the city light is removed from the turn signal and moved to the city light in the low beam.

Chris, if you run across this, i would love to see it ... as i might need this info if i am able to get rid of the h4 bulbs on my car

OK, so to clarify.

Euro cars use four H1 lenses and four H1 bulbs, and high beams consist of just four H1 bulbs all lit. Are these all the same wattage?

US cars use H4 lenses on the outer, and H1 lenses onthe inner. In Low Beam the low filament of the H4 bulb (outer) is illuminated, and the H1 filaments (inner) are off. In high beam mode, the high beam filaments of the H4 (outer) are on and the H1 filaments (inner) are on.

My diagram above is for converting a 4 filament euro setup to a six filament US setup.

How to convert US Hi/Low stalk to euro spec to use four H1 headlamps with city light. This is needed as the outer H1 bulbs will not illuminate when Hi beam is selected with a US stalk.

Under dash disconnect white 5 wire harness junction block from hi/lo switch. Pull forward to get access. Remove yellow spade and yellow/white spade which are side by side with a thin screwdriver to release the retaining barb on the spade. Remove old spades and jump them with new spades and a second wire, perhaps blue, from each spade. Reinsert spades in the same positions and connect junction block.

4w bulb from the dedicated parking light circuit in the H1 lamp housing, very dim. The euro turn signal housing has only a single filament bulb, US has two filaments.

the headlight switch illuminates the city lights, like US parking lights ... its basically the same wiring, just relocated. it might be slightly different - i haven't tracked the electrification. i just know that it uses the gray wire that the USA blinker uses for the parking light.

If it is the grey blinker wire, then that one is active only when the ignition is offer and the turn signal stalk is moved one way or the other. My Euro 635 has that. That's for parking on narrow dark European streets. You dimly illuminate the turn signal (and city light?) on the street side of the car. Maybe that's all the "city lights" are for. I was under the impression they were used in lieu of headlamps when driving in the (more brightly lit) city, sort of how Koreans turn off thier headlights at intersections to avoid blinding others in the intersection...

On my euro CSi when I pull the light button out one click, it activates the low wattage city light in the low beam lens. Nothing is needed on the stalk regarding the city lights. It functions as a very low-wattage driving light. Not enough to see in the dark by on a country road but enough to have others see you and to see if there’s some external illumination. Only when I pull the button out fully does it turns on the low beams, and then the high beams are by stalk.

Our coupes do have the stalk activated euro parking light, even on US coupes and that is why it is only 4w and the rear running light is 5w so you don’t drain the battery. With ignition off you you just use the stalk to light left or right.
