Info for 2800 CS owners

FYI--seat belt docking clip

Correction Dirk--replication of this unique part is not for commercial purposes!!

If it were useful to all E-9 ers I would agree with you but since it applies only to 2800 CS owners that still have original spaghetti belts--this is a completely different undertaking.

It started when I asked if there was interest on the part of a friend in having one for his Coupe--he had not been aware of its existence although a 30 year owner--had never seen one. From that posed question the project was initiated to simply make a couple of them for us two long time owners--mine was broken, restored and again broken as the original material was very prone to failure. The part is helpful to us in taking care of wandering seat belts--NOT as the basis for becoming a parts supplier.

As with any attempt at replication or creation of a long NLA part there are costs incurred in the execution. My thought was to see if there were other owners who would want same and be willing to help defray the cost of producing that small number. Since the part is only applicable to early 2800 CS's I would seriously doubt its merit for ever becoming a profitable commercial undertaking.

Perhaps liken it to the E-9 Driven Badge project--except there will be far fewer ever made.

Murray, my suggestion to go the "commercial route" was just one way to try to reach out to as many 2800CS owners as possible and not just the few that happen to read this thread for the purpose of keeping the final cost per unit as low as possible.

Don't have one but

Does anyone have a spare 3D printer laying around that you would like to share?

While I don't have a 3D printer at work I have sent out several parts out for fabrication and a part that size would be about $100.00 for a qty of one. If interested PM me and I can give you the information.

BonitaCS, I appreciate your offer. If I could send them the drawings I have put together and they could produce a model/master for $100, I would jump on that right now. Unfortunately, I think they need a model to scan in order to produce the information needed to make a part or at least a complete CAD/CAM program. I doubt they would include a complete CAD/CAM program from a drawing and make a model for $100.

Making the model/master is the biggest hurdle at this point. Once I have the model I can cast a multi-piece mold which will be used to make the final parts from a material that I think will be superior to the original BMW specified material. I am afraid if my model is used in the 3D printing process, even the best material they have will be not better than the original material. Part of the original goal was to improve on BMW's product.

I will keep your offer in mind in case I need it in the future for this or any other projects I take on, be it personal or business.

I'm here to help

I'm an aerospace mechanical design engineer and do solid modeling daily. If I had the part in my hand I could generate a model of it in about 15 minutes. Lead times from the shops I have been using are usually less than a week. The materials they are using these days are pretty durable and are no longer just used for prototyping. The only possible drawback I can think of is you might get fine lines on the part that you wouldn't want on your finished part. Check out this web site and let me know if you want some help:

...If I had the part in my hand I could generate a model of it in about 15 minutes....

So that means if I were to send you mine, you would send it back right away ?

Yes

Absolutely, and I’ll send you the solid model, IGES, STEP, Parasolid, STL files as well as a drawing if you like. Anyone can get the parts made from these files but the unit price would go down if several were ordered.

Chris, I molded a few and gave one to Murray used one for myself. I think I also sent one to someone else. I might have one left over from an initial test molding that is not perfect but is still usable. Let me know if there is any interest.
