Hi guys,
I'm not sure whether my friction fan is working correctly. Maybe because we have pretty high temperatures at this moment, but the temp needle tends to climb up, without reaching the red zone though. But then, when driving at higher speeds, the air flow on the radiator brings back the needle, a little lower than the middle. And this does not happen when weather is cooler.
I have seen pictures of engine bays with different fans, and probably different visco systems.
Any comments and suggestions about this? Thank you.
 
Most wrenches that I know use a folded up towel, apply to the fan from the passenger side of the car while the engine is fully warmed up

Hi Don, sorry I don't get it. Do you mean I should block the fan with a towel with a warmed up engine? What is the point?
 
Your fan clutch should be engaged when the engine is warmed up.
If it isn't the radiator won't cool properly.
Fan clutches wear out- test yours.
Never ever use your hand!
use a rolled up newspaper or a thick hand towel

Test First to see if previous owner has locked down the fan to the water pump..
 
sorry for hijacking this thread, but need to throw in a related question to the group:
I had moved from friction to visco clutch about 3 years ago.
The first visco I had installed (bought new from Stefan Ries) appears to have been bad, so it moved very hard and did not spin... as a consequence my fan did spin all the time.

I now have swapped the bad clutch for a used but good clutch - I can spin the fan freely with my hand and it is moving much more easily.
Still I see the fan spin all the time even right after a cold start. So problem not resolved.

What could be the root cause?

Yes, me too, the fan rotates even at the very beggining of a cold start. And also when the engine is warm. So I understand that I need to test with a towel try to stop is on a warm engine. If I can't stop it, it necessarily means that the visco fluid has done its job so as to keep the fan rotating because of a warm engine. Am I right? Hope I don't get a hand or a couple of fingers chopped off....
Another point: the fan freely moves when engine is cold and stopped. I will try also with a warm engine see if there is any difference in how hard it is.
