Upgraded headlights

i'm not going to disagree that the LED is a 'whiter' light ... there is no question about that. the question is what the optics of the light are and how the light pattern compares - especially on the sides (for cornering). some people have experienced that the reflective range isn't as good either.

You make good points and comments rooted in physics. All I know is, everytime I upgraded to LED lights on every car I have purchased, it was an improvement.

I have an H1/H4 setup on my 635. I wired it so that the dual filament H4 bulbs are in the outer position. The outer low-beam filaments are on in the low beam setting. In high beam, those filaments go off and the outer high beam filaments are on, and the inner H1 low beams are on. This setup gives plenty of light. To @rsporsche's point, it is not a blue as LEDs, but not really any less illuminating.

Scott, That is the original setup, when Hi is on the outer Lo filament is off giving four Hi filaments as you stated.
Here is the wiring for that using relays.

Note that this diagram assumes that the standard E9 wiring for hi and lo beams from the headlight switch and the high beam relay is used. If you want to reduce the current load on the headlamp switch, then you can place a relay between the low beam feeds in this diagram, and the relay pin 30. Power that relay with battery or unloaded ACC power, and then use the existing low beam line to control the relay.

With two filaments lit in the H4 I would think it gets very hot?
Yes, they would, which is why the circuit above turns off the low beam H4 filament with the high beams are on...

You can see that when the Hi beam line is hot, the relay switches the low beam line from the Low beam filament to the other Hi beam filament
