So I finally switched the wheels from my 635csi to my coupe. They are the 17' Style-5 BBS wheels. All is great except my front tires rub. I have 235/45/17 tires all around but these tires have an additional lip to protect the wheels from curb rash and I think that is why they rub. What size tires are you guys running in the front if you have the same setup? I figure I will need to replace the front tires before I do any real driving.

Sorry for the bad photo, it got pretty dark by the time I finished.

Some questions

I have a set of 8"x 17" style 42 that I'm refinishing so very interested in your Fittment. What make and model tire did you install? Any problems on the rear? Offset 20 front and rear on the style 5 correct? Lowered? Rolled lips? Fixed camber plates?

Thanks

verde2002 - question is where do the tires rub? my guess is they are rubbing on both sides due to the width of the tire. the pic looks like the sidewall of the tire and the fender are pretty much in the same line ... which suggests trouble in the near future. i hope your fender lips are rolled ... and i would recommend going very slow over speedbumps and when climbing curbs to go up a driveway. i must say it looks problematic.

i hope i am wrong ...

The tires are Fuzion ZRI which I have never heard of but it is what was on the car when I purchased it. There are no issues in the rear at all and yes the offset is +20. The car is on stock suspension.

It only rubs on the inside on the strut body. I am very careful as they will rub on the fender if I am turning and going over a bump at the same time but during regular driving they dont rub on the fender.

Here is a photo of the tire where in sticks out beyond the rim, this is what rubs on the inside.

same wheels and tires

I have the same wheels and tires.
The car is stock height.
Required 3mm spacers on the front. No spacers on the rear.
They were barely rubbed. Once I installed the spacers there has been no further issue.

Had to role the fenders on the front. No requirement on the rear.

Thank you for the information. I just ordered a pair of 3mm spacers. Hopefully these do the trick.

I recently purchased the exact same wheels but haven't bought tires. I also have a set of Carl Nelson springs which I'm hoping will lower the front an inch or so. No idea how they will fit but it sounds like spacers are in order for the front.

I think a 205 or 215 size tire will do fine without spacers but the 235's definitly need spacers. I would suggest you buy the tires in a size that does not require spacers.

Vince has the same wheels/tires and car is lowered

I know Vince has the wheels and tires on his E9 and it was lowered. He had no need for spacers. Maybe you actually won't need spacers.
Does it make sense that the act of lowering would pull the tires away from the shock?

The geometry won't change because the wheel spindle is fixed with respect to the strut.

try 225 in front?

I remember as for Vince's set up, he has 225/45 R17s in the front and 245/40 R17s in the rear (for his 17x8, 17x9 staggered set)

++1 for the Style 5's !!

Yes, you are correct. My mistake. I purchased his previous set which were 17X8 all the way around. I think mine are 225's with 3mm on the front. I will check tonight to confirm.

Here is the original thread.

The quote below from Vince tends to support 235 will work on the front. Possibly the differences in suspension set up and variability of hand assembled chassis may make spacers necessary in some cases.

I'm surprised and pleased that the rubbing is on the strut in Verrde's case and not the fender so spacers should help. If it was the fender and rolling didn't help then would would be truly f**ked. Even in rolling there is a matter of degree as mine are more than just rolled - they are nearly flattened.

Good luck,

Doug

yes, I have 235's

Doug found the quote I was looking for. Since I have Vince's original set of style 5's with the tires he had, now on my coupe then the tires are 235's all the way around.

I rolled the front fenders nearly flat and installed the 3mm spacers.
Vince's quote is that he had no issues with rubbing (his E9 is lowered) but his fenders are rolled.

It's all true, I had that 17x8/235 wheel setup on the car for five or six years with no problems. I drove the car on a 360 mile road trip weeks before putting on the new wheels. I went with the current 225/245 vs. a 235/255 staggered setup mainly because I was worried about the rear lips.

Verde, the Style 5s look great on your coupe!

I finally got the hubcentric 3mm spacers as suggested and the fit is perfect. No rubbing with the 235 tires but I would definitly recommend rolling the fenders. With the spacers you still get 7 full turns of the lugnuts so no need for extended studs. At some point I do plan on installing 215 tires in the front. 235 for the rears are perfect.

You could also add 1" to the rear barrels and turn them into 9" wheels - a company in Vancouver BC called Green's Wheels quoted me $250 per wheel and their work is first rate - ask Pamp about the work they did on his style 5's.

The down side is they can only do this on the inside of the hub so your lips remain unchanged and the ET is 33 so a 9mm spacer is required which means new lugs.

I have the same exact issue with the 17x8 style-5 wheels that I just picked up for my '71 2800cs with stock suspension. The tires on mine are the same 235/45/17 and are rubbing on the front strut as well.

I was gonna order new 205/40/17 tires and was wondering if anyone has used this size. I wanted a setup that wound not rub and not need spacers, just hubcentric rings. Will the 205/40 be too narrow and give a stretched look?

Can't be done as the wheels in questions are 2 piece (single barrel and wheel center) and not 3 piece wheels. These are the BMW style 5s and not the genuine BBS RS 3 piece rims that are fitted on Pamp's coupe.
