This car wasn't delivered to Australia originally so didnt have it fitted, but I have seen several in Australia with air con and even one with a sunroof - so it wasn't an uncommon option here and pretty essential for me to enjoy the car in Sydney. Same with the e46CSL - every e46CSL I have seen in Australia has air conditioning for the same reason. I spoke to some car valuation experts and their strong view was it would not impact on the value of the car as long as I sympathetically installed a factory original (with a modern compressor etc).

We will have to organise a drive with Malcolm and the gang soon so I can see it in the flesh. Have you seen the red one for sale at Classic Throttle Shop in the flesh? Far from perfect but still a nice car, so I’m keen to see how yours compares especially considering their asking price.

Looks like they have done a great job on the Verona car.

Apart from the aesthetic decision on the heavy rear bumper and addition of the roof spoiler, the only restoration differences I can pick up are that I used original spec Michelin tyres and used the blacked out sticker behind the side grills - but I might be wrong on both of those anyway!

I am currently installing air con' using a NOS evaporator and adding later dryer canister and compressor. I'm having difficulty sourcing the old style flange fittings so if you can give a me supplier I would appreciate it. Hoses are not an issue.
I have reversed the direction of the top fitting on the evap' so that it exits towards the passenger well. The other fitting is fixed of course so I need a 180 U-bend fitting to run the other line around behind the evap' and out through the engine bulkhead.
Where did you mount your dryer unit?
And how did you route your hoses to the compressor?
I already have the power steering hoses running below the radiator so it's will be very crowded if the air con' hoses follow the same path.

I noticed both Rear chrome window surrounds had pitting. Rear boot fitting wasn’t sitting flush with the rubber exposed. Some interior chrome pieces were also rough, plus a couple of marks on the seats. I didn’t open the doors or engine or boot so not sure what else.
But a lovely car nonetheless.

Hi David amazing job on your resto. Looks absolutely top notch.

I’m looking at going down the path of original air con reistallation in my csi so your auto electrician would be a good starting point if you were happy to share his details.

Am thinking to get Scotts to do the installation of the new rear CSL duck-tail spoiler I recently bought. Planning to get it installed on my spare steel boot lid. Considering they did yours, I guess they could install mine together with a perfect paint match?

Would be good to get your thoughts. Maybe we can chat about this next time we meet? When should we catch up for a drive locally btw?
 
Yes - they would be the ideal team I couldn't recommend them more highly and as many of you who have followed this thread know, I have first hand experience with several other supposedly highly regarded shops.

Steve at Scotts Panel for all restoration work, especially panel and paint (but also for example a masterful job getting the windows to work so perfectly - incredible!)

Paul at https://www.truelocal.com.au/business/pg-mobile-auto-air-conditioning/collaroy Paul fitted a new undocumented wiring harness from the best UK supplier and got it right first time - he double checked every wire connected to the ECU for example so we didn't do any damage and at the same time added air conditioning and the radio! Brilliant work - Scotts are now using him!

Carl from Korman's in the US for the engine - I thought freighting the engine to them was a bit of an extravagance but of all the jobs over 4 years theirs was on time, exceeded expectations in every dimension, and was economical compared to risking it to someone who had done 1 or 2 of these engines before and didnt contain any of the surprises and nasty turns every other job entailed - I think money well spent - but time will tell

Michael at http://www.eastcoasttrimshop.com.au/ is an artisan - his work simply shines - the trim looks better than new - he is deservedly busy so get in his queue and good books early

Bill Rama from Melbourne is one of Australia's foremost experts on this car - and if I had my time again, I might have asked him to project manage the whole thing. As it turned out he helped with some obscure parts and some expertise and mechanical help on a trip to Sydney - much appreciated Bill.

Parts

W&N Albrecht and his team have been superb. They have been patient and as helpful as possible - even with returns and exchanges. Their pricing is very reasonable and they have supplied 90% of my parts - however, be warned that part designs do vary so floor pan patterns are different etc. IN all case Albrecht has been very fair and reasonable.

Jaymic Pete and the team helped with some harder to find parts and were also super efficient and friendly - a definite second port of call.

Advice - the best advice I received was:

Someone told me that when you renovate your house expect it to take twice as long and cost twice as much. When you restore a car expect it to take three times as long and cost three times as much! How true!

Anyone seeking advice on the other suppliers I have referenced prior but don't recommend above - please contact me directly for more details.

A final thank you to the dozens of you who have guided me in many places along the way and others who have provided private parts - this site and its members really gave me the help and confidence to persist and I hope I can reciprocate by helping others - starting with a sale of leftover parts - stay tuned!

Wow thanks for that I find it very useful. I have a couple of jobs to complete on my car such as the electric windows, the door locks and door rubbers, so I’ll get your thoughts when we all go for the next sydney run.

Post project review and some parts for sale.

The project was longer than expected and ~3 times more expensive than first imagined! Nearly $300K spent over 5 years to deliver a factory or better outcome. So my advice is make sure you have the fortune and fortitude to finish what you started as I witnessed several unfinished projects being sold off for a song at the restorers.

The car speaks for itself and won the Judges award at the 2023 German Autofest beating the 600 or so other entries from Porche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and VW. At the same event it won the 2023 BMW Club Concours' d'elegance the only time I have entered her into any shows. See below for some snaps of all three CSLs together which I did try to sell in one line to a collector or dealer before the market softened.

The car is running perfectly and because of the pristine under carriage only sees cooler dry summer days on the road where she always suprises 'the grid' with her speed off the line. The car had a single decent jaunt around the track (see enclosed BMW track day where I kept to the back of the pack but did manage to overtake a CRX which made me proud!). The day cost nearly $1000 in undercarriage detailing costs so was an expensive day out. It was also the day an M4 hit the wall after apexing on the damp patch seen in the video, so not for the faint hearted.

The car is pampered in every way to keep her in museum condition and is driven only on dry days once a month or so and is admired and photographed where ever she goes, expecially in the CBD.

After peaking in my BMW collecting (and reaching a riper older age) I reluctantly sold the e46CSL to an avid collector after 20 years of fabulous daily driver ownership and track use and wary that everyone who sells one later reports how much they regret it! Ultimately the e9 and the M4 will go to collectors to provide the capital to work my way through my bucket list of cars which include a BMW V10, TVR Chimaera, Ferrari FF, Bristol 411, Aston V8 Oscar India, and when I become too feeble a S63 Convertible...

If I had my time again, I might buy a cheaper CS and restomod for the beauty inside and out but with AP Racing brakes and the like (Heresy in this forum I know!)

There are some odds and sods for sale, so will prepare a list over Easter which will include two factory chrome wheel arches and the decrepit fan assembly which will be free to anyone willing to pick it up from Oatley.

Incidentally I joined the Royal Automobile Club of Australia (www.raca.com.au) which is a very fine place to spend some time in semi and full retirement (and earlier in life) if you are a collector or avid enthusiast.

I hope you enjoy your journey as much as I have mine - get in touch if you are already building or intend to build you own CSL collection as I have started my 'the grass is greener' journey with a 996 manual turbo convertible (IMO no match for the e46's chassis, steering feel and practicality) but a hoot on warm evenings.

Sadly, they declined my visit last year even though I carried my AAA card from the United States…..

Yes. They are quite different now. RACA sold its insurance and breakdown business decades aga (a big mistake!) so it is now like the RAC in London, a private social club with motoring roots. If you join a US club like the Harvard Club or NYAC you will be fine. Enjoy your next visit!
