Hey all,
It's been awhile, but I decided to sell the Bav. I got a little feedback from members saying it's probably worth between $6k and $8.5k. That was over a year ago, so I'll go with the lower figure given the market these days. I'm open to offers. I just want it to go to somebody that'll put in the work that it needs. It's such a cool car that deserves to be fixed up.

The details:

1974 Bavaria with an M30B34, Getrag 265, and triple Weber DCOE 40’s.

Semi daily driver for a 110 mile, one way commute. Starts up every time and has never left me stranded. There’s a flat spot at around 3k rpm that I can’t seem to resolve. Runs rich at part throttle despite my best efforts. Carbs need rebuild, most likely.

Refurbished Tii brake booster from 2002sOnly.

New staggered Coupe King Alpina replicas.

New brake rotors and calipers. Fronts converted to vented.

New a/c system with Sanden compressor and parallel flow condenser. New expansion valve. Only part not new is the evaporator. Heater core recored and hvac box resealed with new foam.

Bad quality color change (from Chamonix) that’s cracking with several rust bubbles. Patches of bondo. Some holes in the floors. Rust on the lower door corners. But hey, the sills and shock towers are solid!

I have the front bumpers and rubber trim for the rears.

I forgot to add new ignition, fuel lines, coolant hoses, brake lines, etc. Just typical wear stuff to make it more reliable. I can include close ups if you'd like. Thanks.

Dave is 20 minutes away from me so if anyone is interested in an E3 you have two to choose from. ;)

Hey Dan - you remembered! I can't believe you haven't sold yours yet. I wanted to buy that thing myself, but that would be going the opposite way of what I need to do. Car hobbies got sidetracked by a bathroom remodeI and various other house projects. I haven't made any progress on the Fiat and need to prioritize.

A forum member asked for pics of the undercarriage and typical rust spots, so here they are. Ignore the weird shadow creature in the trunk. If anyone wants more pics or descriptions, please let me know so we can nail down a good estimate of what this car is worth.

As someone newer to this E3/E9 field, can someone explain the massive price difference between the two? Personally I find the body style of the coupe more beautiful and interesting, but are there other major differences? As much as I prefer to see a car restored and driven, from a purely cannabilistic standpoint from someone currently refurbishing my own E9, a price of $6000 seems worth it in parts alone - the Coupeking wheels, the brake booster, the transmission, the brakes and the AC parts and it feels like you're already at that price, let alone any other parts that might be of value. The sticky thread on the mechanical differences between the two vehicles suggests that there's a reasonable amount of overlap...
Well, if I didn't have a family who would kill me if I added another car into the mix...good luck with the sale!

Yes, as far as I can tell, it's just the styling that is responsible for the difference in prices. As far as getting killed by the wife, I'm in the same boat. There's a repainted Bavaria shell for sale that I'm severely tempted into buying and moving everything over, but that would be the end of me.

I have owned four Coupes, two were parts. And five Bavarias, two were parts. Bought when the market was low - late 70s to late 90s. Coupes are the most beautiful car BMW will ever build. The Bavaria is the most beautiful sedan BMW will ever build. No contest he says. Motor, transmission, suspension, brakes, all the same.

But otherwise the Bavaria has the plusses. Four doors, spacious interior for five adults. A more modern dash dash design. A lovely, small, rectangular analog clock. Outboard AC and Heat ducts the Coupe is sorely lacking. The Bavaria weighs about 150 pounds more, a pittance. A cleverly hidden gas receptacle that is a challenge for the Gas Jockeys here in the Garden State, NJ, which forbids pumping your own. Lovely to stream "Dire Straits" when the outside temperature is pushing 100 degrees. Yeah, I've gone soft at 84.

Because BMW chose to make most of the body, interior, etc exclusive to the Coupe, and because Bavarias have always been under appreciated and thus generally less well cared for. Bavaria parts, the non-interchangeable ones, are generally a third to a fifth the cost of a similar Coupe part. Price taillights if you doubt me.

So you’re telling me to put up with my family’s grumbling? Ok, here’s what I’ll say. If this car is around in 2027 once I am well past done with my E9 and the memory of engines and transmissions sitting on the garage floor has faded from everyone’s memory, I’ll pull the trigger then. I agree that it’s a very cool 4-door sedan and there’s something nice about the overlap between the two.
