1980 BMW M1

This example was a gift to and owned by Nikki Lauda. It has some serious provenance. I does surprise me it has "only" has 266 HP. I guess that was a lot back in the day, but it seems paltry compared to todays super cars. It's all relative I guess! Mecum projects around $650K hammer price. This will be a fun watch.

These don't come up for sale very often. I'm wondering how many E9 forum members own one.
I personally know of six other owners in NA, who still have an E9 and an M1: Dirk in Florida, Scott in the Carolinas, Lance in Cincinnati, Ben in NY, then we have Markus in Toronto, also Manfred of BMW Northwest and I currently own both a street and race version. I have no doubt there are more; if I shake my head enough, don't know if Terry S still owns one of each in Texas, I know he sold the Golf E9, but he may have another E9 sitting about his sheds, it is Terry after all :-))

On the Lauda car, I will just say to any buyers here, do your due diligence on the claims and make sure you are happy.

i have always wanted to own one, but that day has passed - @BMW Pete did me a big favor ... he suggested that i try to sit in his. since i do NOT fit in the car, when seated i stare at the back of the sunvisor and can't really see out of the windshield ... and trying to fold up my legs to get totally into the car was not happening either. as Pete mentioned, if you are 6'-2" or taller, you need not apply.

Also, @Oldbmwcoupes has a procar. He mentions below:

There are 2 fellows here in the Vancouver, BC area that have one of each One pair is in a private collection and the other pair belongs to the owner of a local BMW dealer, he has a really nice collection

Thanks, Rick
Right - I am friends of one of them (he is a few miles east of Vancouver). He is a 'regular guy' who devoted a decent % of his financial efforts to getting the car he has now (he has had it from when they were ~$100k - more or less).
He is the fella that (if some of the old timers here remember the story) I took with me when I went 'Coupe Shopping' in BC about 20 years ago. I drove up to his place and then went to look at the car. We took his M1.
I tell you - if you ever want to go look at an old BMW (of any variety) - go to look at it with a friend who has an M1. My friend and the seller spent 99% of the time around the M1 and I didn't have to worry about having anyone looking over my shoulder as I gave the Coupe the once-over. Too funny. I didn't get that car, but it did reappear on BaT some time later (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973-bmw-3-0cs-24/)

Cheers!
