To follow on Andreas post on the set of 10/72, 10mm fin early wheels, here are 5 early 72 Alpina 10mm fin wheels. These unfortunately are not date matched but are interesting because they show an extreme range of 72 Alpina wheels. All have the tire valves at 11 o'clock when the Alpina logo is at 12, all have the higher 10 mm fin depth and all have the same tire valve platform shape and KBA numbers.

Another interesting note is that the 12,7 and 9 /72 wheels all have what appears to be hand engraved numbers on the rears. This has been noticed before. Not sure what it could mean.

NOTE: If someone is in need of the 2/72 wheel for a special early car, I'd be happy to swap for a later 72 wheel in similar shape and details.

Resurrecting this thread. Perhaps some new member can enlighten us on the engraved numbers on the rear of some of the early wheels.

BTW - STILL looking for a single 5-hole wheel with a 73 date code in the US

I have three 7x14 Alpina wheels -- one 5-hole and two 10-holes. Pics of the 5-hole are below. It is dated 4/73. Hand etching is 1311. Other data on the face is pretty obscure but I tried pencil rubbings. Looks like 2800200 and 1110344. Not sure what that indicates. No BMW logo.

I'm not anal enough (yet) to worry about date codes so I'd consider selling or trading any/all of these. All are straight but will need refinishing. Happy to provide more pics. I'll need to do some research to determine a fair price. I'm not trying to retire off these and I'd like to see them go to someone who needs them, or I'll just hang on to them. Located in Georgia US 30677.

I also have four repro Alpina hub caps. New condition. 58mm bore. I'll list them in Parts for Sale so Chris won't have to remind me. ;)

Here's an example from a wheel that has been for sale for half a year in germany: it has 7976
Dated 5 '73, a 1110344 wheel.

From the multiple examples I've seen, I vague recall a lot of them starting with a 7... there must be a system in it.

- Could they be mass matched, so to make up a set of 4 with identical codes?
- Code to identify a specific worker in the foundry?
- Mold code would not make sense, that is probably already in one of the other casted codes
- Production date is already covered to the month

- 4 wheels in a set I have all have s,x, and a number (12,13,14 and 29)
- 2 of the 4 wheels I have also have a large letter E or P inside a circle
