What would it cost it purchase a 5 speed transmission for a '72 3.0CS?? Not to acutally convert it, but to store and have as a sale point when I would sell my car? Any ideas about what an appropiate price would be? Thanks.

Depends on which 5 speed you get. Getrag 265's seem to go in the 500+ range for used, while 260s are a bit less. Of course, "used" is a very loose term. Rebuilt units can go for quadruple or more that amount, easy.

Sounds like you don't need to buy a transmission but rather buy options
to buy a transmission. Futures trading, usually done in Chicago. Options are cheaper than transmissions and don't take up space.

For the real thing there were two 5 speed Getrags on ebay, but I think in the UK. May serve as a price reference.

I'd offer that prices vary depending on where you live. I couldn't get $500+ for a used 265 here in Portland. Prices here are more $300 - $350 for used ones.

Transmission Conversion

I am a current owner of a 1971 2800 CS with an automatic transmission. I am thinking of converting it to a 4 or 5 speed manual. I have always had a thing for manual transmission. I also beleive, perhaps incorrectly, that it is not really a sports car if it's not manual.

1 Would this lower the value of the car?
2 What's the big difference between the 4 and 5 speed. Pros and Cons?
3 How complicated is this undertaking?
4 Where can I buy a manual transmission for my E9 and how much will it cost?

Any help would be appreciated.

1 should increase the value of the car
2 5th gear is about 0.83 vs 1 for 4th gear, drops 800 rpm I recall
3 about 5 days of sporadic work once you have all the parts, a lift, and experience
4 usual sources can procure all parts, 1981 is a good donor year

There are photojournal guides of the project elsewhere in this site.

There is a really good writeup in the tech section here about how to do the swap. One of the vendors also has a good write-up on what parts are required.

Does anyone remember which vendor it is and have the URL?

Cheers

Thank you. I could use the exact location on that article. Who would be a good vendor to go to for a manual transmission for my E9 and how much would it cost. Again thank you.

On our 2800CS we did all the work including taking apart the new tranny (265) and replacing seals etc as synchros and gears were in good shape. Only thing we did not do was the actual shortening of the replacement drive-shaft. Bought a replacement unit and kept the original drive-shaft in case a future owner (after my demise) would want to return to original.

Total cost was around $1600-$1700 and several weeks of my labor at $0.00/hr. Of course besides the tranny swap the rear crank seal was replaced, flywheel resurfaced, new clutch, PP, and TO bearing, slave cyclinder, etc.

My cost of tranny was $700 which included the E12 bell-housing and shipping. Probably paid more than most but was from a SO. Ca. known supplier of these and was in great shape.

My car had a ZF 4 speed.

If anyone wants an e9 4 speed box and associated bell housing I have one going spare. The only problem, it's heavy and I am in the UK!

Although the above list is quite comprehensive, it's perhaps a little over the top to buy and replace all those parts. I've done two swaps on my car, first to a 4 speed, then a 5 speed came up.

Hardest item to find was the OE console surrounding the shift lever but you could make one of these if you weren't asleep in shop class. If you were asleep, then maybe you're missing fingers and will have a bit of a harder time.

Clutch and brake pedals need to come from a Bavaria, may be difficult to locate as these cars are now largely gone.

'81 52i1 with 5 spd trans purchased for $350 not running, towed home, later discarded to municipality when done. Honolulu (the city) will tow and dispose junks for free if you give them title.

Get new:
Clutch kit $250.00
Guibo $55.00
Flywheel bolts and nuts $25.00
Transmission seals (input, output, shifter) and rear engine main seal

re-use:
Use the driveshaft from your auto trans, good to go per Carl Nelson
Clutch slave cylinder disassemble, clean, reinstall
Clutch master cylinder disassemble, clean, reinstall
Fluid reservoir clean and use
Reservoir to clutch master hose
Clutch master to clutch slave Hose to pipe

Shifter from 528i, also:
Rod
Platform
Bushes
Knuckle
Clips
Foam
Tranny support
Rubber mount
Shift console
Teflon washers
Leather boot
Shifter knob
Platform rear support
