I own a 1972 3.0csi - VIN# 2260863 - It has the factory 4 speed manual.
What 5 speed is best fit... I've been told the 245 - 1980-1982 320i

Any sage advice is most welcome. My winter upgrade project.

zero idea if the 245 fits up to an m30 engine ... or will hold up to its power / torque. the standard 5 speed solution is the getrag 265/6 (overdrive) gearbox. the alternate if you can find it is the 265/5 (close ratio box). check out the FAQ - Transmissions

everything you need to know is in the FAQ ... with one exception - buy the mounting kit from either @halboyles or Coupeking
everything you need to source to do the swap

here is the Carl Nelson article on the swap

Nice car, looks like one side mirror was installed in Europe and the other in the US when it was repainted...
The overdrive would be Getrag 265 and there is a ton of advice here on that. An expert in New England in Mario Langsten and perhaps can help source a 265.
Sage advice? Do it!

I suppose a threshold question that you should ask is why you want to change to a five speed. As Scott commented recently, the first four gears in the 265/6 are the same as the gears in the four speed. Thus, the primary benefit of having that 5th gear is for long drives at highway speeds. Consider how you are planning to use the car and where you live. If the vast majority of your usage is local trips and shows, the trouble and expense of the conversion may not be worth it.

If you put 4000 miles per year on your car and you get 20 mpg, you are using 200 gallons of fuel a year. Assuming $4 a gallon, you are then spending $800 on gasoline.
Now, if the 5 speed improves your mpg to 25 mpg overall (which would be a lot), you will save $160 in gasoline annually. Compare that to the cost of the 5 speed swap.

Plus, the getrag 265/6 is becoming more and more difficult to find, and it is very difficult to rebuild them because parts are very hard to find.

If I had a four speed in my car, I'm not sure I would change it. And if I did, I would make sure to keep the four speed on hand just in case.

Here are some notes from my installation a couple of years back.

NB Jaymic are in the U.K. Just posting the invoice here to give you an idea of the bits you need

What you need:

Getrag 265 gearbox with speedo gear (and the bell housing!) - you will need the speedo drive from your existing 262

Invoice from Jaymic

See attached file - these bits were all needed!

Other bits you need:

Release bearing fork (arm)
Shifter mechanism tower

You need one of these as well:

Other stuff

You will need the prop shaft shortened. If you want to keep the original then buying a prop shaft is very expensive!

Other suppliers

I bought this mounting kit from Couple King. It saved a huge amount of effort! - https://shop.coupeking.com/products/e9-5-speed-conversion-mount-kit
