72' 3.0cs original side & hood vent finishes...

Couldn't help myself on this subject so I pulled out the Orange Parts book circa Nov 1975.

It appears that the original hood grilles were Matt Chrome, part number 51 13 1 810 539/540 and NLA. It then lists a new part number, 51 13 1 827 281/282 which is available today and is Bright Chrome. Chrome grilles were used "only for all dark paint coatings matt chrome up to chassis # 2240644 and 2250503." These are US VINs but euro VINs are listed too.

It also shows that part number 51 13 1 827 275/276 are "painted black for all remaining bright colors" after the two VINs listed above.

The reference to dark and bright paint coatings confuses things a bit but the real answer is that chrome grilles were used up to mid 73 US models then BMW switched to black grilles on all coupes. These US VINs relate to Feb 1973 build dates from a listing I maintain. This is what Carl and Peter referred too, the change was made in the middle of the US 73 model year. It also makes sense that all 2800CS coupes had chrome grilles. This is also the same month BMW switched to the larger electric window motors.

And 2250503 is in our Registry here in CA and it is supposedly original and is also coincidently painted Schwarz.

I recognize that this makes little difference to most members here but I find the the trivia related to our coupes interesting and sometimes even fascinating. I am sure Arde will have fun with this post!

i would like to find some matte chrome hood grilles to go with my matte chrome side grilles.

Very confusing. It kind of confirms the switch to black grills was to save cost.

I would have tried to please everybody by using chrome on the port side and black on the starboard side.
That way people know when you are approaching to dock.

Chromed plastic side grill

I placed an online order with Tomkinson for the "chrome" left side grill 51 13 1 827 283 and did not realize that the message "Part number was superceded!" by 51 13 1 827 277 .... the part number for the black grille!

I just typed in 51 13 1 827 284 (right chrome) and it says it is superseded by 51 13 1 827 278 (right black)!

Anyone have a clue what is going on here???

Is the chromed plastic NLA??

Chromed Plastic Washer Nozzles

Somewhat related to chromed hood grills, is there a source for the matching chromed windshield spray nozzles, located a few cm nearby? I searched "nozzle" and part number 61 66 1 353 768 but found nothing. Perhaps they were a common German item of the day, used on other cars.

Penske does not show them as superceded, maybe worth a call. When you need help, they are great.

These were always black, not chromed.

You can paint the black ones with Harley bead blast silver paint, gives a matte cad plating look, spray lightly and several coats, FYI

IMHO, it doesn't matter which way you go, as long as you put the black vinyl under the side panels, most restorations don't have them but they are reproduced.

Chris, early 3-liter cars had chromed nozzles, perhaps late 2800 models as well.
The orange catalogues list three different nozzles for e9 models.

It actually looks great from 20 feet away...

This is my '70 2800 cs, 36,000 original kilometers and never restored. Metal grilles, don't know if they're made of aluminium or tin.

windshield washer chrome?

These were always black, not chromed.

Hi, I found something interesting on my ceylon original car. Both of my nozzles are black too, but in the glove box with my original window winders was a single chromes windshield washer nozzle. I don't know if they used to be on my coupe or where it came from but it's definitely the same size and shape etc.

When I had my hood and sides redone the shop did something with nickel plating. I am not sure of the process or the number of coatings/dippings, but the look is a deep rich not as shiny as chrome look.
Looks terrific over the Polaris.
