for a nice coupe it is really an odd place. scams, yes ... or cars that need a lot of love, or even rusted out coupes

Yep, bought my coupe from a Craigslist ad. As you say, it was rusted and in need of lots of love but it was unmolested. And the price! Oh My!

I'll miss what Craigslist used to be, I found so many cool parts - especially wheels - all at great prices. I remember buying two sets of e21 Recaros off a guy in Seattle for $50 a pair. I've bought three square body GM pickups for well under 5k each. Now all the parts and wheels are on FB Marketplace for top dollar and all the pickups are on BaT expecting extra money for original patina that they 'enhance' and then clear coat everything.

...and at the same time FB Marketplace is such an impossible place to shop for parts. The search is intentionally crap. Search for a specific item, for example a 2002tii. You will get mercedes, audi, chevrolet, etc. It is an impossible mess, and it has to be intentional to get us to spend more time there and I refuse.

No kidding and there are so many fake accounts now on FB Marketplace it can be just as bad, if not more frustrating than CL. One expects the scams on CL, having a FB account was supposed to solve that looking at their ratings, profile etc. but now it is sh1t! It's funny reminiscing about the good ol days of CL. We all remember (except maybe a couple people) the good ol' classified ads (Free Penny Saver, Nickel's Worth etc. all used for firestarting paper now).

And if you really needed a rare part you better have a group of friends in the same hobby or get to know your local BMW Independent Mechanic really well or better yet, local club racers/autocrossers etc. The hunt overall became easier with the Internet but the hunt has changed and the scam radar has to be up and running all the time. Some of the worst people on the planet that choose that life. So sad...such a waste of life.

Indeed Craigslist is not what it used to be. I found my coupe on NJ Craigslist in 2008. Really showing my age, growing up in NJ there was a weekly publication called "The Want Ad Press" Bought and sold a few cars that way. Similar publication in the Bay Area (can't remember the name) in the 1980s-90s. I bought a 56 Dodge wagon from in 1991. Still have the ad.

That's super cool you saved that ad. I never had the foresight to do that. There was also that App that CL finally had the guy or whomever take down where you were able to find expired ads, but I don't think it went back that far. That thing is a tank but looks like a super fun family vehicle to get out and go to the lake or something.

That's funny they mention the mileage to Steamer Lane, used to surf that a lot in high school. Jump off the cliff and save the paddle out! It would get big there. Used to see O'neil still on the beach or surfing back then. But always like Sewers better, less people and you could get tubed in a 3'-4' wave.

I don't have as awesome copy of my car's for sale ad as John's, but I did save a screen shot of the Craig's List posting. I didn't actually get to buy it till October four months later. There were several viewings and back and forth between me and the owner. He really didn't want to sell, but was saddened after he found it needed more work than he could manage. In the end he took my initial offer made a few days before, which surprised me, and surprised me again when we were signing the title over, he disclosed he'd paid twice the price we had agreed on.

Below the ad is a photo of the car as I first saw it.
