A report from the Silicon Valley Trenches

A lot of conversation around Chatgbt in both academia and workplace.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars are cool. I wouldn't mind one.

Things may have developed some in the hydrogen area since I last read up on it, but a sticking point then was where is this hydrogen coming from? Are you cracking hydrocarbons (gas) to get it? If so, where does the non-hydrogen part end up? And how much power does that process take?
Are you cracking water with electricity to get the hydrogen? Sea water? Fresh water? California doesn't have a surplus of fresh water and salt water is rough on equipment. Where does the power come from? California doesn't have a surplus of that either. Nuclear has its own carbon footprint, though it's less than coal or gas. And hydro power, well we are back to needing more water.
Solar power would be a relatively carbon free way to get that energy, though production of solar panels has sone issues as well.

Hydrogen cars are basically electric cars with a hydrogen fuel cell instead of batteries. This lets you refuel fast and not require as many rare earth components as fully electric cars. So you're limited to the extent of the hydrogen refueling stations which are almost nonexistent outside CA, I think.

I do think hydrogen fueled cars are a possible option for the future, but I don't think we are ready for a full scale roll out yet.

Totally agree, the decision had been made at some point that they would be getting the hydrogen for fossil fuels - not ok. Defeats the purpose.

Over here we're going to use hydrogen gas as storage for our wind power. When there's too much electricity created by the wind turbines, that electricity goes to producing hydrogen gas, and next day when it's not windy, the hydrogen gas will be used to produce electricity.
This process has about 40-45% efficiency, but we're also using the heat waste that comes from producing the hydrogen gas, which means much higher efficiency (but I haven't read any numbers on that)
We're building a lot of wind turbines right now, but without storage it's pretty much worthless, so it'll be interresting to follow how this goes.

Maybe we need a Poll to see if members want to continue seeing political innuendo mingled into the posts. I personally feel it detracts from the friendships that are a great part of this Forum.
Isn't your post esentially a Poll to do a poll? -;

Let me get it started:
1. It's a great training for my english!
2. A cool insight into another corner of the world, eventhough we have ASML here in the next village which links us somewhat.
3. But often a bit, well very, US oriented. It needs worldly additions to get the global view on things, and, well, that is up to us perhaps.
4. I do sense that some members go more into the reaction mode on these threads, instead of the listening- and-share mode that I'm preferring. And from that, I see the risk on friendships like @HB Chris points out.

all-in-all; it's not a problem for me. If i don't like it i just click another post.

But I may be getting ahead on the poll now...

@HB Chris I wasn't thinking about it - discussing whether or not to use fossil fuels to create hydrogen shouldn't be discussed in this forum - in my opinion. I discussed this. I'll bet there are other issues discussed in this thread that may be too politicized.

I don’t see why you thought I was referring to your post as I certainly wasn’t.

I think AI is a great tool to write stupid cover letters for employers that insist on wasting your time. Employers can then use AI to decipher the cover letter into "I want job."

We were several that pointed this out when the political talk first got accepted in the covid thread, but it was okay then, so I don't understand what's different now? Can't have it both ways, or just when it suits someones personal political view.
My point is, either there's no political talk at all, or accept opinions from all sides.
Personally I have no problems with political talk, but unfortunately I know what it can do to small forums.

Political talk is polarizing. I vote against. I think any political talk should be flagged, doesn't matter what the view is. Of course we should be reasonable "my e9 chugs gas" id say is ok, "gas prices are high for these reasons" is not ok. Just my 2c.

I love talking politics and by the consensus of views on this site, I am the polar opposite of what seems to be 95% of the people on here (I'm very right wing conservative and proud of it). I was one of the culprits that commented on the Covid thread late after holding back for a while that seemed soon after it was shut down. I was told it wasn't just me and my comments, but others as well that didn't agree with my (or their) posts, but either way, I will be the first to say it is NOT a good idea on a small site like this geared to vintage BMW talk to have political threads.

I am all about TRUE free speech with no censorship, something this country has lost long ago. But I have my outlets for that on the web with plenty of politically oriented sites out there, some even with no censorship, which is nice. I can dish it and I think I can normally take any criticism and I'm open to other thinking. Those sites are hard to find, but I found them. Perfect outlet for political talk, this e9/e3 forum however isn't the place for that.

We all have a passion for cars in general I think (obviously vintage BMW's), let's just stick to that. There is so much to discuss on that subject that we will never run out of things to talk about. That's just my 2 cents. I don't come here to make enemies or hurt other peoples feelings (even if incidental). Just sticking to car talk/events/etc. lessons that likelihood.

Although it seems one can still piss someone off in that regard, but usually it is unintentional and someone is just being honest about their assessment of a vehicle and the other person doesn't want to hear it. Let's all stay friends and have fun here, the world is too much of a mess right now to make an enjoyable site something that can cause friends to get into it over politics on a public forum and get upset. It's really not worth it. Most of us are older here and as we all know, it is hard enough to keep good friends over the years, no reason to mess that up on here too. Peace out!

I’m not moderating this thread or OT, but I’ll respond as the Covid thread owner. The COVID thread was started in February 2020 when there was no pandemic, and zero political chatter around the subject of the virus. As a thread owner, I pleaded to keep it health related. As a moderator, I ultimately locked my own thread when members chose to selfishly dive into politics. It is one of the few if only threads that tracks a global event from inception to peak trauma/impact. There is still lasting impact, but again it was closed due to political nonsense.

I vote to remove political commentary. Most of this thread is informative and interesting, but the couple of political zingers spoils it. Some people can’t seem to resist, and it irritates me when they succumb to the temptation. I would rather not know whether a board member’s political bias matches mine. It detracts from our shared love of cars and informative off topic threads when it is interjected.
