Hi all, my name is Mark and I am a caraholic.... and new to this forum. I debated putting this under Classifieds or New Members but ended up here (Hope that is ok) Anyway I am here joining the current throng of E9 hunters looking for a car to buy. I live in Carlsbad near San Diego. Not new to BMW as I have had at least one as a daily driver since the early 80's some modern some more classic like 2002's and an 2800CS. Didn't hurt that I was in the BMW parts business for a lot of that time, first as a counterman then a 10 year stint as a Parts Manager at a large Dealer. Currently driving a 03 540.

I have been watching Ebay and Craig's list for cars which now seems to be dominated by the car flippers and shady dealers. I am not looking for a garage queen or investment grade car. What I am after is at the way other end of the spectrum ($5k-$15K depending on condition). I would like to find preferably a 3.0 that could be a daily driver with some work, doesn't necessarily need to be running, moderate rust is acceptable (except the shock towers and minimal floor pan issues)...

If any of you know of a car for sale outside the usual channels of Ebay and Craigs List, please PM me and if it works out there could be a bottle or case or ? in your future.

Any help or additional input is appreciated. I look forward to actually contributing once I get a car.

Thanks in advance and Cheers
Mark

I don't want to discourage you and others will disagree, but, at that price point a coupe is going to have significant issues. Try to set your sights a bit higher and you will spend way less in the long run. Good luck in your search.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice and funny thing is I have given the same advice to guys looking for a cheap Ferrari (308's in my case). Project cars for me a a form of therapy (probably about the same price too) Short of paint, upholstery and machine shop work I do all my own labor and my parts background helps with the parts sourcing.

rsporsche, thanks I am watching the ebay car which at the right price may be a candidate.

I have to agree with HB Chris: the days of $15K coupes are over. Where were you in the 1990's and 2000's when coupes were cheap and values never budged? Today, the world has finally discovered e9's so I'm afraid that a $15K budget would limit you to cars with structural rust.

You are fortunate to be in Carlsbad, near La Jolla where Carl Nelson is based. My advice would be to visit La Jolla Independent and make Carl and his team aware of your quest. They may not throw any bargains your way, but they are well connected with the e9 community.

That one on ebay could fit the bill if it does not climb too high in the next 5 days. Owner seems to be pretty honest about condition. Under 5K and you can do your own welding? Might work- good luck

Contact/PM mario1017, he was the prior owner and can tell you why he sold it.
Thanks Chris

Thanks Peter, I am watching the ebay car with 78 other crazies so the number may go too high in the end after you tack on another $1-1.5K to get it back to California. I just got a new tank of Argon for the mig so maybe...Having just finished a 73 240Z I am no stranger to rust..(it's just not as hidden as on the E9's)

Hi Mark - welcome to the obsession. I bought my coupe 15 months ago and my "rolling restoration" .....

Thanks Ohmess great story.

Is this the white one that planned on parting because he had no bites on the rolling chassis?

Yes looks to be, I found a couple old threads with a lot of info and more photos. Originally offered at one point for $3K with no bites.
