You can make a better clip than the original with coat hanger wire. Bend it into a flattened Y shape with the bottom of the Y forming a squashed loop. Leave enough loop enabling a grab with pliers to twist the clip into the dash slot to firmly hold it in place. File the tops into sharpened wedges. You can create the shape you want in order to pull the dash down flush with the metal frame to your satisfaction.
I had all of the original clips but found them to be unreliable in holding the dash to the frame, ( kept popping out ), as well as not seating close enough to prevent movement between the dash and frame - ( when in place the dash had a bit of play up and down ).
DIY is sometimes better. More work, but better. If I call it re-engineering it sounds like I'm a professional.
