Was this the same for the early carb CSL's? Remember that red survivor one on BAT a while back. That looked to have some sort of cream coloured stuff, but may have rubbed through the the primer?
Last fall I inspected a very original US spec 3.0 CS. The paint, I am certain, was original with meter readings of 3-4 mils. This image of the underside shows the gray coating but of interest is a bit of Malaga peeking through. My guess is the cars received the tan primer with some overspray of body color along the outer edges, followed by the gray rubbery coating
