CSL Air Filter Box Restoration Questions

You have given me something to aspire to in the restoration of my Taiga E9 engine bay. Beautious!

Unfortunately the people who put in my Haltach broke the plastic harness tube that should go along the top of the engine cover, so every time I see that I get a bit irritated, so that’s my next thing to fix. And a new clean plastic washer bottle.

Mal, what brand is your distributor?

It’s quite a massive distributor for some reason. Not sure what brand but maybe from a Japanese 6 cylinder car. I will check. Car runs very nicely though the way it is all set up with this distributor system, FI and a Haltech. Was all done by a BMW specialist workshop in Sydney about 4 years back.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice - clips now fully plated and re-installed.

Note the interesting crazing pattern on the oil filler cap.

Maybe someone will need that to see paint color - still genuine paint (just cleaned with degreaser); in live for sure it's not just grey, it is more like grey mixed with some olive & dark green.
Not sure about exact RAL number - in near future want to take my filter box straight to shop with powder paints to find out, but as for now some of RAL 7002 or 7013 i found on internet seem to be pretty close.

This was my note:

Powder coat: RAL 7022 b35 air cleaner/matches D-jet

I used RAL 7043 "Verkehrsgrau" on our 1970 2800 air cleaner

I know some will disagree but it is extremely hard to match. I had paint custom mixed to do the 2800 struts and subframes as they were also grey/green but darker.

Thanks, is this colour from an e9 CSL? if so the same colour as our e3 donor car - so we can easily match.
However, this e9CSL has a similar colour to ours - maybe many were painted a simple grey in error?

Any further thoughts?

Just to clarify, 7043 is Traffic Grey, 7022 is Umbra. A good paint shop can custom mix to a good original cover.

As far as i know all D-jet airfilter boxes (E3 Si/E9 CSI CSL) where originally the same color.

Why are so many painted light grey? Even on very nice restorations. My CSI airboxes are clearly the olive drab grey as seen in your pic above.

Most of them are probably just grey because people take/took as a model internet photo's - where most of filter boxes are ... grey; Other thing is that some people just want their air box to be painted - exact color probably doesn't much matter to them, so they take/took first better paint from the shelf.

Little update, after powder coating.
RAL 7022 Umbra Grey (manufacturer JOTUN) - i think it's 99% the same color as genuine.
