Looks like the ebay auction got updated, w/no mention of VIN or VIN plate.

ALso, originally, I wouldn't say it's a "cloning" kit but rather a "re-body" kit.

Clone denotes it's obvious from VIN, etc. that it's not original and is a homage by appearance only, to what it's cloning.

Very kind of the seller to make all future buyers aware to keep away from 2285063!
It is easy enough to make up a tangible log book full of the cars history, repairs, service etc, even for the trained eye and lend credibility to the "CSL"!

In all other such cases/ cars, the buyer is unaware of the fraud and has to make sure the pre inspection is thorough and from a top CSL expert (far away and few who I'd rely upon).

listing updated to:

"Please no more idiots messaging only genuine enquiries for what is listed below"

and

"The original shell is beyond economical and structural repair hence just memorabilia to frame and put on your wall"

To be fair, if the car was broken in the 80's when these things were worth bugger all - it takes a certain degree of foresight to keep the V5, vin tag and chop out the chassis plate I guess...

This kind of thing happens all the time in the classic bike world, BSA Goldstars in particular seem to be popular 'log book restoration' candidates - slightly 'racey' rare goldstar version worth 3x a normal goldstar, not that much real world difference and easy to fake - kinda like a 2 wheeled CSL....

2285063 throws up the following details Keshav. Seems like the incorrect VIN for that.

I am (at least one of) the idiots to whom he refers ...

I posed as a potential buyer in order to harvest the chassis number (which we'll assume is 2285063). On further enquiry he gave me the registration of TWX 6L, and orginal colour of white

This is within the range of the 500 RHD CSl's (Nosmonkey- not sure why it's listed as a CSi, but all the other information seems to tally). I have it on excellent authority that this car was advertised in the Sepember 1982 BMW Car Club CSL newsletter as being broken for parts. As you say Afishe this shows some foresight for the value of the chassis number and plate at the time

It is of particular concern that the seller is from a bodyshop that specialises in classic BMW's - Pristine Bodyworks in Essex (which he mentions in the listing). Not only did he understand the potential value of these parts but also gave me instruction on what to do to create a '£100k plus car'

Now that this information is on the forum , and searchable, it reduces the value of the V5 and parts he is selling to exactly what he is listing it as - memorabilia. They should now be unusable to be able to clone a car.

I did let him know after all that I wasn't interested and it was only my intention to get the information to try to prevent a fraud happening in the future. His reply ? ' I thought you were one of the pricks from the forum' (!)

Courtesy of John R. From a slightly later copy of CSL News than referenced above.

Sadly, all too common. I looked at a VERY badly corroded CSL a few years ago that if you tried to move, it would have broken apart, needless to say the seller was not letting me take note of the chassis number. Remarkably, the aluminium bonnet and bootlid had survived well. It did sell, and the number likely sitting in another car. I've also been offered a chassis number very recently, from another London seller - but not this one.

2285xxx is definately a UK CSL. Maybe just a misprint in the excerpt that Nosmonkey posted. The CSL is also a CSIL, technically.
And once the fraud CSLs are built and exported, the chance of recognition diminishes. Finding a CSL expert in other countries (HK, Sri Lanka, AUS, Africa where known CSLs exist) will be a great challenge.
The vin itself is no guarantee anymore.

I messaged the seller to be clear about what's being sold. Here's his reply .....

Hi,

What is Inc is in the listing on ebay if you read the description but here is what the price is for:

V5 Inc chassis plate to weld in and vin plate.
A pair of alloy skinned CSL doors.
Front and rear CSL / CSI disc brake RHD axles in need of refurbishment.

No engine.

It is currently not on sorn.

I have a manual 4 speed gearbox, manual pedal box, prop shaft and RHD steering column and maybe a few other parts but not much.

It is a white CSL number 63 of 500 RHD Cars made.

As you are aware this v5 allows someone to turn there standard e9 into a £100,000 plus car if they wanted to convert it so send me your best offer.
Wow!! “...welded in..” he explained it very well I guess!

Can our mods make sure that if someone does a google search for the VIN that this thread comes up?

This thread is the fifth result on google when I enter ”BMW VIN 2285063”, so hopefully people will find it.
I added some tags to the thread, but not sure if that helps?
