In the final stages of pulling all the bits of the CSL project together from the multiple locations it has been stored at over the years!

Got the motor - correct number to match the shell 2285467 - great! MAP sensor and computer all present.

Cant find the front struts - not so great as the ones on the donor car are pretty rotten as shown - will likely have to source some replacements. Also seem to be missing most of what would constitute rear hubs (inner and outer drive flanges)

Found the diff and it looks to be the correct 12/39 's' LSD. Which is nice

Found what we believe to be the correct gearbox - has cast part number 262.0.200.00R 225, stamped number 048043/8 - question - is this likely to be correct? The vendor has a shipping container full of random BMW engines and gearboxes - this looked the most likely and was the one from the CSL as far as he could remember... photos

Overall I get the feeling there is at least one more (probably heavy) fish bin or parts to find somewhere (or not...) either way it is not the end of the world - most parts should be salvageable from the CSA hopefully. Oh, and the vendor broke the back window moving crap about in his garage and we cant find the front window so that makes taking care of the CSA glass a bit more important.

I am not having one of my giddy with excitement that I managed to buy a CSL days, nor am I having one of my wracked with terror 'why the hell did I think this was a good idea days' - I am somewhere in the middle and I think that is ok!

Hi,
I'm in Papamoa and have been down the same path you're heading with my CSL. It started like yours in bins and got it all together finally after years and $$ (oops missed a few, I should have said years and $$$$$!). I still have ups and downs re owning it after finishing putting it all together. If your near Tauranga, I can suggest shops that have done the job once and would be able to help with yours. I also disassembled it and did the reassembly so may be helpful if you need it... cheers, Bryce 027 22 566 592.

hi Bryce. Thanks for that. I may well be in touch. At the moment I am looking at using Mike at the Surgery in Tawa (Wellington) to do a lot of the work. I have a lot of 'getting my head round' what I have and dont have to do first - get it organised as best I can and earmark all the relevant parts of the CSA for removal that I will need. The CSA has surprisingly great trim all round outside (even though it has great holes in the body). Hopefully it will yield some of the suspension/drive components I will need too despite being in an 'advanced' state of corrosion! I know I am going to be spending a LOT on new parts. I dont doubt the shell will prove not to be quite as good as it looked at first glance but I am prepared for that too. The journey begins! Alan

All parts shown on photo's are correct.

I think the CSL struts and wishbones are different on a CSL, 1 degree different camber, BUT I don't think they are marked as CSL, does anyone know how to ID them apart from checking camber after assembly, Is the CSL gearbox different?

ps if you hear of anyone shipping a car from NZ to the UK I have a rusty vintage motorcycle frame I bought on trade me a few years ago that I need ship on the cheap...... it is just not worth the courier / customs / handling fees to send it. Pat

Camber in CSL might be little bit different because of progressive springs that lower the car if compare to stock CS/CSI springs. Struts and wishbones in road version CSL are the same as CS/CSI.
In road versions CSL gearbox was also the same GETRAG 262 4-speed.

hi there. pretty sure the main suspension components are all just standard CSi (except the springs) - had a bit of a wobble when I saw the steering box as I thought the CSLs all had the different ratio one - but then realised that as this is a UK city pack car the standard ZF power box is correct (i think! - feel free to really upset me by telling me otherwise!). Still looking for the struts and front and rear wheel hubs - I guess I will need to source replacements along with the distributor which is also missing...

Anyways - speaking from experience - sending stuff from NZ to the UK is expensive (you literally could not get further away!) In my more doubtful moments about my pile of CSL bits I do wonder about just chucking it all in a shipping container and selling it to someone in the UK on ebay.. but postage would be getting up there! No idea what it would be worth.

For a bike frame you might want to try www.packsend.co.nz they have franchises all over NZ and are good to deal with in my experience - you should be able to get a rough quote online and it will be less if the seller wraps it up and drops it into one of their depots. They do air and sea freight - sea freight is much cheaper so long as you are not in a hurry (3 months?) and they handle the customs stuff I think. Top tip - make sure you try to get the seller to declare the value as less than NZ$1000 as over that and they need a load of export paperwork at this end which is a pain. You will still get hit for VAT and duty in the UK - not much gets past them these days I am afraid. Good luck! Alan

I have two new outer drive flanges if you are interested.
I presume you mean part # 33411110721
Hi. Thanks. Hopefully I will be able to pull some from the donor car that will be fine. Just in the process at the moment of working out what I have and what I dont - despite the seller insisting that it 'is all there somewhere'... It clearly isnt, and I will need to source a lot of parts if the donor does not yield them (auto on carbs). Cheers for the offer though. Alan

I used pack and send to get a frame from Australia, cost a fortune, the crate they made was twice the size it needed to be and heavier than the contents, UK customs stung me as well, I will keep looking, I should have some front struts but they are in the UK, Pat

oh well - that was the best one I could think of I am afraid. Yep - shipping is very expensive if NZ is involved - I have a feeling I will be up for several thousand dollars in shipping of bits from WN!

W&N have flat rate shipping of 75 euros. They often have specials such as the most recent one where they offered a 30 euro discount for orders over 300 euros which brought it down to an effective 45 euros. The exception to that rate may be extra long or heavy items such as a windscreen or long trim pieces.

There are some very good suppliers in the U.S such as RM European and La Jolla Independent BMW that are well worth a try.

Also Ebay Germany always shows E9 stuff for sale.

all information much appreciated! I was actually just going through the catalogue adding up now roughly all then new stuff I will be buying - it comes to a LOT! cheers. alan

Walloth is non negotiable on discounts and shipping for bulk, ( hey, they're German! Or as Kiwis would say - they're German hey! ), whereas someone like Carl at La Jolla may be more amenable to a deal.
