cylinder head compatibility

Hi Don,

sorry i meant 0.25mm not thou so c. 10 thou. The thicker gasket gives 0.3mm so in theory if only 0.25mm is taken I end up with more clearance than I had before and there was no sign of any piston/valve contact.

I think I will go this route rather than trying to procure a later head. I have been looking for a later head for a year with no joy and this head is the original to the car with a nice camshaft and valves/springs etc.

This is the elring number I have for the thicker gasket 772 968 which is bmw no 11129065639

Regards,

Rohan

If you are after an M30 head, I just pulled an M30 from a 1973 CS from my parts car. The plugs are very clean and this was a good running car until it hit a light pole. PM if you have any interest. I can separate the head if that is all you are after.

Hi JP, i bought a new one so am not in need as such but keen to buy a spare later head for the other coupe as I just expect these original heads to give trouble now!

Wiseguy - I am in the UK - where are you?

why does no one mention that one can get a copper head gasket for too-thin heads? Don't know myself, or where this might be obtained, only that they can "stick" to aluminum cylinder heads or iron blocks.

Honolulu - that is correct - good point - i found various offerings in layered steel also. I am not sure about these but if my original head wasn't showing a crack starting I'd use one on it. I also imagine they are less forgiving of the block surface. I think though a head that is say 128mm below the 128.5mm (from memory head) is asking for a big gasket.

Copper head gaskets are best on dry deck heads.
Not so good on sealing fluids.

A little of revival of this thread.
My -69 2.8 (piano pistons) overheated and I have an -85 head that I can buy. This will bolt straight on without interference if I have understood everything correctly from reading at firstfives and here?
It does not have a hole for a fuel pump but I'm running electric pump so I don't need it.

May need to mill the 1985 head, remember to send the front timing chain cover to the machine shop as well. When My car's head was replaced with a 1986 we needed a thicker head gasket to keep the valve & piston clearances the same as the original head.

I would make sure the casting number is the same, I don’t think you want a 3.0, 3.2 or 3.4l head on a 2.8l bore. Since it doesn’t have the fuel pump fitting it’s definitely a much later head.

I am milling the head and chain cover. Why not use a 3.0, 3.2 or 3.4? I thought all M30 heads were the same?
I checked the numbers when i looked at it and I think it came of a 528i.

The head on my 2.8 is a 277358 head from 1981. No issues with motor. I had the same casting on the CSI, but it was an ‘83 head. Both had fuel pump holes. The 358 casting was used on the B35 also.

My b35 head is 1708843, date 90. Why would a CSi head have the fuel pump hole?

It was a replacement head and the fuel pump hole was blocked. It also had the 272 cam in it. Just trying to point out that you can stick a newer head on a 2.8 or 3.0. I think we arrived at about 40% or greater e9 members have an unoriginal head.

My zb35 has an ‘89 casting. It’s not an e24 block though, as it has the motor mount adapter...

B35 heads are definitely different. The combustion chamber is larger and you will lose compression. Had I kept my 2.8, I was planning to attempt high compression pistons with a B35 on the 2.8 block. The intake valves are noticeably larger in a B35.

I agree most have newer heads, 82 and newer with original casting number. I would think matching chamber diameter and bore diameter would be key, 2.8 vs 3.0 and others.
