did this 35cm petri really existed ?

Don't be tempted to fit a 350mm Petri onto a coupe. Way too small...does not look and feel right. Temporarily fitted a 35cm Momo Prototipo once, it looked totally out of place and had an awkward driving feel to it. These smaller Petris are priced much cheaper and more readily available than the bigger factory leather covered 38mm wheels. Also, these were never covered in leather, just the soft and squishy foam material, pressed and formed to look like black cowhide. Most people are used to a more rigid steering wheel grip, therefore, the soft and spongy foam has a very strange feel to it. This also applies to the bigger 40cm Petri wheels, which used the same foam material.

Obviously, the seller is not too informed about the rarity of 380mm BMW Petris. One will come across ten 35cm wheels to every one 38cm Petris and they are priced about half of what a nice 38cm Petri will fetch. $700 is the starting bid, so god knows how much he is actually looking for. This 35cm wheel is worth about $350-$400 at best. This very same SW has been on Ebay for the past year or so and still no takers.

Petri wheels

I think the 38cm is the perfect size for an E9. Just as an FYI, not all of the 38cm Petri wheels came covered in leather. I've got two of the 38cm Petri wheels and both of them just have the hard rubber/foam grip. I also have a 40cm Petri and it has the same hard rubber/foam grip too. I run the 38s on my 2002tiis and the 40 on my coupe. I find the 40cm to be a little too big, esspecially with power steering. I think that the foam grip can get spongy as it ages. My 40cm wheel is NOS and the foam is quite firm on it.

I love my 400mm Petri wheel. But I love wood wheels too which accent the wood dash and doors of our cars. Have been searching for something that incorporates both. I found a vintage wood Nardi with polished aluminum Petri-like spokes at 385mm. Just installed and so far I like.

The only problem I have with the 400mm wheel is that it doesn't leave me with enough knee room below the wheel. I'm a big guy 6' 2" and having Scheel seats probably doesn't help matters in regards to the knee room. Nice looking wheel Steve. Never seen one of those before. Cool.

To each his own regarding size and shape and composition. For some folks, a beautiful wheel can be hard on the hands and a comfortably small wheel can obscure the instruments.

Gratuitous steering wheel potpourri:

Agree - Petri better for aggressive driving, wood one for leisure cruising which is more my habit here. Wife says these dinner guests have to go!

FS: Petri wheel - Rare Concave - 38 or 40

EDIT: oops totally thought I was creating a classified ad. What I get for being up at 4am in bed on my phone looking up old e9coupe threads. Sorry for bumping this from dead!!! Mods feel free to delete.

Figured I'd post mine on here to generate interest as the e9 crowd is most appreciative towards these wheels...

I have owned both 38 and 40 Petris before, and this wheel has no stamping indicating size. I believe it to be 40 as it is quite big. It is also different from the more common "flat" style as it is concave (please see pics). Which I think enhances the look and is more "e9-esque" like the wood factory Petris. No adapter or button. But good buy for someone who already has the parts or would be willing to buy a 35 Petri swap the pieces and sell the 35 wheel.

Thank you for looking!

Please see ebay ad here: http://m.ebay.com/itm/221682156281

Concave Petri 400mm wheels are from a 1970s VW Scirocco..

The slightly concave 400mm Petri wheels are originally from 1970s VW Sciroccos... Unlike the flat Petris they have a thin plate welded that keeps the spokes ridgid.

They bolt directly to a BMW hub and look and work great on an E9!

Most people would never see the difference between a flat and very slightly concave Petri once on the car.

Jeff-I've had two of those Scirocco Petris and they sure seemed flat to me. I suppose they could have been slightly concave but nothing like the wheel in this ad. And they also didn't have that welded ring.

I found a reference online that the 400mm concave Petri is from an Audi 80 or Passat TS. I'd guess that's what this is, but then again at $600, throw a ruler across that thing!

Todd, The dish on the Scirocco Petri is VERY Subtle...

I just measured and the VW Scirocco wheel that I have is 400mm with a slight dish...

Like I posted before the VW Petri wheel fits the BMW Hub and once on an E9 looks great.

Only the experts Chris, Scott or Ron etc. would even notice that the wheel was not a BMW Petri.

I was also able to modify a Nardi Hub to fit the Petri wheel and it works great on the E9.

Steve
I thought your Petri wheel was a 380? I have a 400 and feel my Nardi 390 is a better size for our cars but i really like the Petri look for the car.

PS I saw the 74 3.5 a guy here in town bought on Friday,it is the same colors as yours and what a nice job he has done adding 73 bumpers, new Alpinas and the interior all refreshed.Looks awesome just like yours!!!

Since this thread started I am now sporting a leather 380mm csl wheel and hub, I believe it was on when you visited. I needed a little more leg room than the 400 gave me (that's it in the earlier thread pic) but I like that size too.

I too really like the Petri look - it's a beautiful design. The leather one in the car now:

Jeff, i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you really mean Scott Crater ... and not me.

Check out these guys: http://www.craftcustoms.com/ located in the Dallas area. Contacted them to recover my 38cm leather CSL Petri and an oem 850i 3 spoke leather wheel and was quoted $325 to recover each wheel. They really seem to know their “stuff” and from the various pics, they really do good work. Will definitely use their services when I’m ready.
