door brake fix/replacement solution?

Evaporator plastic hose instead?

I was re-reading this thread from the beginning and saw what Don said about using a piece of the evaporator plastic hose as the easy fix. That does look easier and probably just as good or better than the nylon thing that I did. I didn't notice that before. Don's the man

+1 - Don's the man

More door brake pics

I installed the Mercedes Door Brakes this past weekend. I did have to trim the plastic covers in order to get them to fit, but no other mods to the door brakes were needed. Works great. Pictures attached:

Putting a Mercedes part in a BMW is like wearing a Real Madrid jersey in Barcelona.
Plus aren't Mercedes just made for taxis in Germany?

On my 1974 the door reinforcement beam interferes with the brake a little bit. It still works, but presses up against this beam and might be ever so slightly ****ed relative to the front door edge. Also, no way was the plastic cover going to fit at all.

US vs. Euro?

Must be the difference between a US '74 model and my Euro '74 3.0csi?

Better design IMO

All I know is that all three of my cars are sporting the Mercedes door brakes because I find the way that they work, feel and sound much better than the modern BMW replacement door brakes that are available now. I removed brand new modern BMW replacement door brakes from both of my 2002tiis in favor of the Mercedes ones. There's a guy (Harry Davis) over on the 2002FAQ that makes modified versions of the Mercedes door brakes (shortened arm length and a few other minor mods) that fits the 2002 model. I did that on both of my tiis a couple of years ago.
That's why I did the same thing on my coupe. If I didn't install the Mercedes rubber cover over the pillar mount, it would be hard to tell the difference by looking at them, but I like having the grease covered. The new BMW door brakes pop too much IMO and also seem to put more stress on the pillar mounts which are prone to breaking on the 2002s. But that's just my opinion (which isn't worth much). That reminds me, I've got two pairs of brand new 2002 BMW door brakes that I need to try to sell...

An update here. I just bought the MB (shudder...:p ) door brake and installed it. Worked a charm. I got the spacer for ACE Hardware (the restorer's go to) and drilled it out like described above. Mounted the DB with the open slot towards the interior. Job done!

The OEM BMW brake is truly a POS break. Just check out the little wheels that the lever is attached to. The spring broke at the curve. I first thought is was high cycle fatigue but then I remembered it is from a passenger side door! Huh? Anyway, I expect many years to come with the MB unit.

Drilling out the spacer. 1/4" OD, #5 wire drill for the hole.

Nice, I used an e24 door break because my "new" BMW one broke with very little use on it. I had to drill a hole in the arm and put a bolt in there to stop it from opening too far but it works much better than the original and it's all behind the door panel so no one will know... except anyone who reads this :)

I thought I was buying Meyle Mercedes doorstops on Ebay for a good price. Turns out they were in a box from China with no Meyle logo anywhere. Anyway, they appear decently made and likely will work the same as Meyle. Plating is fine on them. Seem to work very well as door brakes. Hopefully I won't have to look at them again. I had to grind them down to fit their best.

The last few Meyle items I bought were Chinese, I think they are just a front company and I no longer buy their stuff.

Two Mercedes part numbers are mentioned in this thread:
123 720 05 16
and 129 720 01 16
Any idea what the differences are? Does one work better for a coupe than the other? The second one is about twice the price of the first.
