FWIW I found these in my 1/72 Bav...

They appear to have a 1976 date code.

Is there a potential problem in using one for an M-series car which would be heavier up front and also by default, have a firmer ride?

Yes this is something I’ve thought about and goes back to the question that I asked right at the start of this thread; has anybody fitted these shock absorbers to an E3?

What you can do is call or email Bilstein and ask them what the difference is. My experience is that they are happy to help. Go with the numbers over the opinion.

Hello all on this thread. I have read this thread at least 5 times, finally got my strut nut off(wasted 2 hours then got it in 10 seconds with impact gun).
I am still confused as to what I have.
1971 2800 e3.
Found a KYB made in Japan
ID of strut tube is 48.55mm;
length of shock, floor to top lip is 42.8 cm or close to.
What do I have and, more importantly, what can I replace with? Hoping to put in Bilstein HD's.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

So, a quick update. We established that my car has E12 type front strut tubes with the 48mm gland nut. Great, so this means that an E12 Bilstein will fit.

What's not so great is that nobody has any. Those suppliers who say they have them on their websites etc then confirm that they have no stock when I call them.

Anybody know of any for sale?
