Well...I wanted to rip out the engine as soon as possible so I didn't want to mess w/tracing wires quite yet, so I decided to yank out the whole wiring harness practically.

Question: at the fuse box area...can I just go ahead and start cutting the wires here? Or should I try to save them and the fuse box?

The match ups for hooking up a FI engine harness

Coupe...motronic

Alternator
Blue to blue

Coil power
Green to green

Oil pressure
Brown/green to green/brown

Starter
Black to black/yellow
(Big gauge black)

Temp gauge
Brown/white to brown/yellow

Tach
Black to black
(Little gauge black)

You will need one more wire!

Fuel pump
Green/violet to green/violet

So from this diagram, I only need from the E34:

1 (alt)

7 (coil)

5 (oil pressure)

18 (starter)

4 (temp)

9 (tach)

13 (fuel pump relay)

? (power to ecu)

definately pull the harness from the outside as a unit
it will come right out.
save all of it
then splice them together on the bench

At the fuse box, are you saying I'm going to actually be using that fuse box from the E34? Or keep it all to make it easier to trace wires later on?

I already chopped the wiring a tiny bit (RHS in the front going to the horn, hood light, and LHS ABS module). Figured I didn't need those.

You have no need for the harness in your pic, that's part of the E34 chassis harness. You only need the detachable engine harness.

Okay, that makes me feel better.

I'm not seeing how the harness detaches; hence why I am pulling practically the whole harness in the engine compartment w/the engine.

There's a big round connector right next to the diagnostic port. Just twist the connector and it comes apart.

Although you will want to cut the chassis side of the connector off with some extra wire so you can splice that into your chassis.

BTW, besides the DME, what are the other two boxes for that were in the same location as the DME20161217_133936.jpg ?

Do I need them?

One is the ABS module. The other might be the transmission controller if it was an automatic, or any number of other things. No you do not need them. There's 2 relays near the DME that go with the engine harness, you do need those. (fuel pump and main relay)
