So, was reading another thread and thought this subject could be its own topic opposed to hijacking another so, here we go.

What are the actual weights of the various E9s?
Below is a list I started and would be interested in having other E9ers 'weigh in' ;-)
The road cars incarnations are of particular interest.
Did the later cars get heavier?
Are the Euros lighter than the US deliveries? (I am thinking so)

Weights based my Net research on old race cars sites and weighing the various parts as they were removed from my project.

'70 'loaded' early 2800cs = 3025lbs (R&T test drive article)
'70 Alpina 2800cs (SPA winner) = 2678lbs
'71 Alpina 2800cs (Niki Lauda's car) = 2711lbs
'72 Broadspeed CSL (early L racer) = 2425lbs
'73 (May) Alpina CSL = 2341lbs
'73 CSL Works =2383lbs
'71 early series 1 csl = 2700lbs?
’72 'City Pack' CSLs = 2950lbs?
'73 'loaded' US delivery CS '73 = 3200lbs? (noticed US cars have extra 'plates' in doors)
'73 'loaded' CSi = 3100lbs?
'74 Works CSL (Stuck's 4v car) = 2360lbs
'74 CSi Luigi car (SPA winner) = 2777lbs
'74 IMSA CSL (ie: TBL) = 2300lbs or less?

Input/corrections very appreciated. Again, I am guessing on the road cars here. It would be interesting for owners to chime in on their cars. Digital scales at your local dump/recycling plants are within 5-10lbs I believe. Take note at the scale if ya got junk in the car/trunk, driver in car (deduct your weight) and your fuel level.

I'd wager that weights will very quite a bit from owner mods and accessories (stereos, A/C, etc...)

Curious.....

The Jenny Craig Report

Hi Shannon,

This could expose us to a public scolding for boy racer excess but I have kept almost all the bits and anything done can be undone. I'm curious what other surgeries (light o suction?) have been done in the name of lightness. HVAC controls removal from centre console?

My '73 CS with m90 3.5 with b35 head EFI with 5spd:

Manual (e3) steering box (-35)
Custom 2 piece exhaust (-15)
A/C delete (-20)
Aluminum rad and electric fan (-15)
Odyssey battery under rear seat (-25)
Rear seat delete (-30)
Power window mechanism (F/R) delete (-50)
Fixed rear quarter glass windows (+5)
Spare tire delete - repair and inflate kit added (-12)
Front/rear bumper delete - CSL front air dam added (-55)
Stereo deleted - gauges added (eh..)
Dyna Mat deleted (-20)
Rear roll cage added (+75)
Tools + tool box deleted (-15)
Front hood support mechanism delete - replaced with prop (-12)
Lower dash panels (electrical and steering) and glove box (-10)
Bosch SR41X starter (-12 (?))

3,154lbs with full tank of gas (150) and a skinny driver (150) so 2,854 dry and empty for purpose of comparison.

My options from this point on are fibreglass hood and trunk lid, plexi rear window and quarters windows ($$$$). I refuse to give up my Recaro SRD front seats because nothing is as comfortable after 12 hours of driving. Don't miss the power steering but kinda missing the passenger front power window if I forget to roll it up before heading out.

Hi Doug,

We'll call it Jenny Craig's 'Recipes from the Dark Side'.

Curious where your car was originally delivered, a Euro or North American car?

My brothers old '73 US car had extra plates laminated to the interior door skins and were noticeably heavier than my Euro '70 doors.

Gonna hit the scale this week, its raining right now and we know the rule. ;-)

Carb'd CSL...

Weighed the Lightweight today with a 1/2 tank... 2,665 lbs

So that would be about 2,605 without fuel. I'm guessing the Getrag 5 spd is adding a small penalty over the original 4 spd but other than that it's the weight they rolled off the line.

Now I'd like to see an actual weight on a Bat for comparison.

No cranky my car

Doug, delete the starter and put in a hand crank -22c

No need for a crank start - couple of years ago while my starter was acting up I had one man push starting down to an art.

I replaced the OEM starter with a remanufactured Bosch SR41X - weighs about half as much, draws fewer amps and cranks with equal or more torque. Forgot to add that to the weight reduction list.

Snowing at 2000m.

Hit the scale today.

2700lbs
Driver out with 1/4 tank of fuel and spare in trunk.

3.0 cs- delete / non standard.. 2830 pounds with zero in the petrol tank..

steel bumpers removed, plastic rear..

alloy radiator / thermo fan (fan and viscous fan coupling removed from engine)

manual steering

headers

2 piece exhaust

brake boosters removed, 20mm master cylinder installed.

triple webers

mechanical advance distributor, no vacuum on the car anywhere.

fixed rear windows, plexi glass

no radio or aircon.

manual front windows.

scheel front seats.

fibreglass boot / bonnet / bonnet pins installed.

odyssey battery under rear seat.

re the brake with no boosters ,and smaller diameter master... have had a brake test completed on the car by an engineer in order to have it registered,, while the pedal is claerlay firm, it does have good travel, and is street leagl in terms of effort required to porduce .8 g of braking force,,, I actually really like it........

And the power steering pump and box are furthest forward and all on the driver side so polar moment effect is significant.

Indeed, I bought a much smaller AGM battery and moved it into the trunk inside the wheelbase and on the right side. Am looking into manual steering options now. (Having previously looked at wheel/tire weight). These subtle little things make a huge difference in how the vehicle feels in a corner.

Reading about weights so throwing my content in here for safe keeping. A year ago yesterday I weighed my car. 2,845lbs with about a quarter tank, minus driver.

1971 2800CS
  • No bumpers
  • No front torsion bar
  • Rear seats removed
  • No spare
  • No floor pan carpet (tunnel and rear seat base present)
  • No rear interior panels
  • No rear shelf wood
  • No trunk wood
  • Manual front windows
  • Group 47 battery (smaller)
  • 16” wheels on 225’s (heavier)

Edit: Using CSL bits and a few other tricks, so far I’ve landed at shaving 225lbs out of the needed 240lbs required to get to the 2,605 estimate from @E911 above. This included aluminum door hinges but no modifications to the door frame or
skin. I have it all in a spreadsheet, relying heavily on realoem weights.

Of course after doing that I need to add the B35 weight, the alpina airbox, triple webers (heavy), and of course HL wipers. :D
