eBay UK - Barnfind E9 CSi

Hi All, I bought the car. I'm happy with it, done a few of these and some more exotic ones not for the faint hearted. Let's see how I go.

I have an awesome team to do this so will share progress, just in planning stage as will have stock look but upgraded brakes, suspension etc etc. Giving myself till end August 21 to get on road all being well.

Sold as total resto and I bought it as one. Sunroof will go as not original, rebuild from scratch. £35k to £40k ALL IN (including purchase price), depending if going back to original or I decide for Bat look. Watch this space. . Its not what you know boys, its who you know!

good luck. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Well you all know it's always good to start ambitiously . Parts list being drawn up as we speak.

Congratulations. And yes, please keep us informed. This is very interesting. Helps motivate others, and underlines the fact that, if you have some experience, and resources, you must always rescue a Coupe in need! God luck with the project, and let's have a look at that "sunroof'! ;)

Nice to see E9 will be secured and not a source of parts.

Happy to see how the project is going.

And yes. It is a motivation for others here.

Thanks guys will keep you updated. I think people forget at nearly 50 years old there are not going to be cars without rust for the money around £15k. I'm talking series 2 csi. Main thing is to buy a complete car trim and bits wise. Engine etc can be sorted but all the small bits add up very quickly. I've always left interiors, wheels etc till end in event these can be done as you go. Money skimpt on body and mechanicals are opportunities lost and no point having a beautiful looking car that doesnt run. Will keep you posted.

I know you all love this sunroof ;-). So start strip car tommorow to see what's lurking underneath. ....

Good call , I think !
I would be interested in seeing how you delete it
Mine has a factory metal sunroof, but the roof skin is rusted badly around it .
So I will have to work some magic to bring her back .
I do want to keep the sunroof and I have a roof off of another E9 to use for repairs ( it too has a sunroof, but no rust ! )
I am wondering should I swap out the complete roof skin ( a massive job which might be beyond me personally)
Or should I replace only the section that is rusted out . ???
I am ignoring it at the moment , as I don’t want to get too overwhelmed by it in my head :)

Good luck with yours !!!

Welding the patches on the roof surface is extremely difficult to keep the shape of the roof.
The frame (underneath the roof surface) condition should tell. It should have to be removed anyhow for proper work around.
Much easier for the body shop is to change the complete roof as this is also an opportunity to check A and C pillar inside and protect it after.

In general it is body shop decision based on what they will find in original and donor.

I would like to keep mine in but ... rust will tell o_O

I think you are probably correct, welding in a repair could easily cause heat distortion on the panel.
I will leave that as one of my last jobs on the body as it seems like a massive fix .

Some E9s has a real rust problem inside A-pillars, so worth to check inside using inspection camera. It might be a decision point related to roof repair.

I know E9 purists which were opening A-pillars anyhow.

It is a massive intrusion but on the other side due to lack of B-pillars it is wise to have A-ones well inspacted/protected as they will impact complete body strenght (e.g door closure stability and noises from the car's body while running on bumpy roads)

I'm really interested what will be there ... The roof in mine E9 makes me scare a little

Miklos in Hungary uses a late model car roof patch for this that he swears is a perfect fit, maybe he will give you that info unless he wants it to be proprietary.
