Recent stories have prompted me to post my two first sightings of an e9.

I had seen my first coupe at the age of 14 while in LA on family vacation. Up until that point I had only read mythical stories about their racing history. It was driving and I caught a glimpse of the rear. To this day, a properly set-up coupe seen from the rear reminds me of a flying saucer, BMW's very own 'Disco Volante.'

My second first happened years later when I was driving on 'B' roads less than five miles from my house. There it was, a great big, fairly rusty, Tiaga green hulk. I could not resist and pulled over for a closer inspection. I was amazed at how sporty the lines where compared to my then current 2002 (e10). The 'A' pillar swept backwards and it was long and low (a mean looking car). The owner informed me it was a 3.0cs with a factory LSD (maybe some of you can confirm this option actually existed?). The car was sold shortly after I inquired about it.

It took me another 9 months of searching to find my coupe, and I hope to read other stories of BMW e9 'firsts.'

Cheers,

MF

I got my first LSD at a Dead show in '76

I am not sure I follow? 'Dead show' refers to some sort of a car show?

Stan, Vince, I appreciate your response. I have yet to check if my CSi came with factory LSD, but I am presuming this was an option on all cars and not standard on e9 models.

Is that where you got your hubcap decals as well?

I saw my first coupe drive past me on St. Charles Ave in New Orleans when I was in college in 1982. Nachtblue 2800cs. Never forget it, I ran out into the street to get the name on the trunk. Made a mental note - someday...

Had one 2 years later...

and another 25 years after that

Not all LSD is a limited slip differential and a dead show has little to do with cars and more with beeing gratefull.
Thinlk more along the lines of Timothy.

I was hoping this thread would not stray so far off topic.

I appreciate the response guys.

The first one I ever saw in person I bought. I was cruising around on a road bike with my Brother-in-Law in Sunnyvale, CA and came across a '72 baikal looking a little tired sitting in the street. I couldn't resist and knocked on the door. "Its my son's and he's not living here right now". Perfect! After a few calls back and forth I bought it and it became the first of many coupes.

I understand the LSD references, but I'll be honest, it caught me off guard at the beginning.

Usually when posting 'LSD' on a car forum one would expect 'Limited Slip Differential' type comments. Although I will admit I only referenced it as 'LSD' and not 'LSD differential.'

Dan,

I like this story. Mine is also a Baikal blue coupe. Do you still have this car? and are there any pictures??

For many years now I have had aspirations to buy a second coupe, albeit one is plenty to keep me busy. The colors Tiaga and Verona come to mind, but....

OK-serious

First viewing, walking home from a bar in Venice CA, Across the street- parked in front of Bruno's Restaurant (not there now I hear), around 1985 a very faded cranberry color, also strange slightly boxed fenders, not big "club car" boxes, just maybe about 2 inches or less at the apex. As I hurried over to it telling my then girlfriend-now wife- check this out, this is the coolest car you'll ever see. My girl being a "car girl" inspected it carefully and said nice, but I don't "see" it. Ok, no problem, we were not married, I can put up with her lack of aesthetics for the time being, after all it was not MY car. Fast forward, 25 years or so later I brought my poor dilapidated 3.0 home on a trailer- My wife spent a few minutes walking around the car, inspecting it, I stood back like a proud Papa, She walked back to me and said: "can't wait for you to finish it up, thanks, I always wanted one".

I was taking my 2002 tii in for service at Ott and Berger BMW in Williamstown, MA in 1972. There were a bunch of people standing outside the dealership, so I went outside to see what was going on. What I saw was one of the salesmen behind the wheel of a brand new dark blue metallic 3.0 CS. He was laying patches of rubber and then backing up to start over again.

I thought to myself, "What the the heck is that model?" Two years later my wife bought her own, a barely used 1972 fjord blue E9.

Had only seen pictures of 2800CS/3.0CS's in sports car magazines back in the day and more recently in internet used car ads, but always thought they were beautiful cars and would be great to have one someday.

2 years ago I was searching for a nice 2002 roundie and after inspecting and test driving a number of them, it occurred to me that I should also check out a CS. Found one listed in the BMWCCA classified ads that was still available and within reasonable driving distance away. This CS was the 1st one I ever saw in person. My heart started racing when i saw her parked on the street outside the PO's home. Fell completely in love after the long test drive. 2 weeks later she was parked in my garage.
