Oil Filter Change

Why not use the E28 top bolt filter unit?

Here, the replacement element is about half the price of the E3/E9 one.
The container comes off with negligible spilling and it's narrower, so easier to manoeuvre in the limited space.
If you wish, you can fill the container with oil before reinstalling
The rubber sealing ring seems to be better-located and less likely to dislodge
All the E28 filters I have bought came with the sealing ring; it's been a separate item for the E9 ones.
There is no spring, plastic washer and steel plate to take care of.
The E28 unit has a non-return valve to prevent the oilways draining back down, so the oil light goes out as soon as the engine fires, or before if you have to crank a couple of turns.
If you get excited about the environment, a replacement filter is a lot less wasteful than a spin-on unit.

I considered this style housing...

But what I discovered is that they used a real cheesy plastic relief set up that was prone to failure. I believe if one were to buy new in this style, it has been improved with a steel valve and seat. No way I would take a chance on this used piece I had kicking around...
