First Time Engine Oil Change-- Oy!

Does the bottom of your oil filter have the large cupped washer stuck to it? #13 in diagram. 11421252466
FCP is out of stock but they do have a nice picture.
The "double lip" seal (think bulkhead grommet) is installed on that plate. 11421252465
Your picture seems to show only the lower half of that seal

No, it does not. So, this rubber bushing gets placed on the bottom of the filter element? If so, is this part available anywhere?

That washer serves to lift the oil filter up but I don’t think it has anything to do with the seal. Did you have the washer #3 there, which may be critical to prevent leakage from around the bolt? Take a look at the side of the canister - is there an oil leak running down the side suggesting the leak was from the upper gasket or is the side clean and the leak came out the bottom?
If you end up needing that washer, I think I have one. I had heard the warning stories about that washer getting lost and bought one only to realize that it isn’t necessary in the top bolt filter canisters -it doesn’t fit down in there.
Hi @e9Leveque! It seems I discarded the rubber gasket (bushing) that goes on the bottom of the oil filter. Can you check if you have one you are willing to sell to me? I plan to run the engine to continue my fluid changing process... coolant. Thanks!

Don' forget to remove the engine block plug when doing the coolant. It is on the passenger side, down low and toward the firewall at the level of the engine mount.

And the reason for that is all the nasty stuff is down there!

Let's make sure we are all talking about the same parts here. Part 13 is a metal washer that sits up into the bottom of the filter and is often discarded because it sort of "sticks" to the filter and so you remove the filter and throw it away not realizing the washer is stuck on the bottom. The rubber grommet i THINK sits in the center of that washer hole, not quite sure what purpose is serves, and I agree it's odd that it seems we can see it on the top of your spring with the bolt coming up through it, suggesting that maybe it separated from part 13 the metal washer. I have both parts 13 and 14 (metal washer and grommet), let me know which of the two you need. Mine is also grayish-white rather than the black shown in the previous picture posted. I'll dig these out and post photos here.

Seems it needs both.
Cupped plate is an important piece to install if you want filtered oil to your bearings. From the oil pump, oil is supposed to travel to the outside of the filter, make its way through the filter to the center leaving the nasty particles behind.
At the top, the filter is "sealed" against top housing. At the bottom there is significant open space and the filter element would be free to travel up and down were it not for the bottom spring and plate.

Can't really tell on the picture if just looking at the small end of beehive spring or remains of seal on top of spring.
If you only install the rubber seal, that is not large enough diameter to seal anything by itself without the cupped plate.
Filter will drop to bottom of the can and do very little else. Oil will go past filter, not through.

Makes sense, thanks for the thorough explanation. I found my metal washer, this is about as simple a part as there is. Is it the case that these are difficult to find? If so, once I’m home I’ll 3d scan it before shipping it off to @Catbert so that we can make some more. Let’s not have this piece be the cause of dirty oil. Regarding the rubber grommet, I know I ordered one since I see it in my EBay history (shipped from Egypt, no less), but couldn’t find it on my initial glance through my parts bin. I’ll check again, but does anyone have one available to measure inner and outer diameter as well as thickness? If it’s only serving as a grommet then a replacement shouldn’t be too hard to source with the measurements.

Much appreciated @e9Leveque. I am not sure anything did indeed get thrown away with the old filter element. Here's a close-up photo. Can you see if part 14 is missing? It looks like part 13 is there... to secure the spring.

Part 13 is called a "shoulder washer". If they are not available, it should be fairly easy to have them made. I don't think making them from plastic is viable because of the engine heat, but they do make high temp ones. Also probably easy to machine.

If you still have this out can you remove all of the parts in there and lay them out? I think we are having trouble telling what’s in there. And yes, I agree with Scott, should be easy to machine and I’ll scan mine for that purpose.

I already installed the oil canister and realize I will have to remove it again. It's easy to describe what I have. The picture I just posted shows what is attached to to bolt within. At the bottom is just the bolt washer and of course the bolt. So, parts 13 and 14 presumably sit on top of the spring and beneath the filter element. Anyone familiar with the parts diagram can determine that I am missing those parts from the photo I took.

Yes, I can see you're missing part 13 - if you still have the filter you took out, see if it's adhered to the bottom. I think the part we are questioning is as one looks down the shaft of the bolt, the very first thing that is around the bolt is either the very last metal curve of the spring OR a part of a rubber washer, hard to tell from the pic because it's just a dark ring around the bolt. That's the question.

And now we know why BMW changed to the top bolt unit with ZERO stupid little parts that is much smaller and doesn’t come so close to the alternator.

Who woulda thunk…..
