FS 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL

Just finished working on three bats- they all had aluminum trunks

@Keshav will probably know. I thought later Bats had steel boot lids on account of the down force from the wing. Noting @sfdon 3 Bats they could have come that way new without the rear wing fitted at the time?

I didn't see a vin for this car. It looks to be post-facelift from front valance, but that could be new?

2275461 - the closer i look, the more little things i see.

with the torsion bar hold open, its not an aluminum trunk lid. has to be a steel lid with the center wing support or there would be a nice indentation around that bolt thru the lid at the center. i just noticed that they left the torsion bar bolts in yellow zinc and didn't paint the torsion bar mounts (body color).

i'm also a bit confused by the gas tank pipe being at a severe angle ... something just learned as i see in the trunk pics of 2 Bat 2s that they do the same thing. i always thought that only the USA 74 models had the narrower gas tank due to the bumper bracing but i see that it is typical to all cars. but another little thing - the right floor (upstand) is missing.

Sold $381,000.00
And if it had the documentation of the restoration (and all the other historical things that that would go with) - Per Hagerty... A #1 condition car (that this was purported to be) would/could have fetched over $500k.
I have to at least acknowledge that the seller set a reasonable reserve that met those expectations.

we will see if it gets anywhere near 1/2 mill. i'm guessing 385k RNM
Pretty close!!! (except it did meet reserve - or C&B made up the difference)

On a side note -
If anyone thinks that the commentary on BaT is devoid of useful info...
IMO - This auction makes Bring a Trailer look like a bunch of scientists debating string theory or such.

Reading through the comments on the CSL here was a near absolute waste of time if your were actually intending to learn anything about CSL's in general or this car in particular.

OK - I'll go back to my corner....

while i was close, it is below the recent Hagerty condition 2 (391k) ... which i hadn't looked up when i made my prediction. whether this would make 500k if it was a condition 1 would remain to be seen. 381k for this car is a decent showing. the condition 1 value for a bat is 529k and i don't think that would get reached in this market unless it was @BMW Pete selling his fjord ... and we know that won't be for sale to tempt fate
