Getrag 265 short shifter platform - WTB?

No, have to cut & weld the treaded part on, it sounds easy, it isn't.
Standard parts it is then. I went through an ordeal of adapting and mending when converting my E28 to M52B28. Not again. Gearbox, stabilizer bars and coilovers will be the only mechanical things that deviate from stock.

I drove a friend’s e9 with short shift kit, not for me, it felt like it wasn’t going into gear until I really shoved it in all gears.

I am a huge fan of stock shifters. It's long been people buying very used cars complaining about the sloppy shifter saying "WOW I NEED A SHORT SHIFTER!" Over the course of installing said shifter, oftentimes they replace all of the wear parts with new then they extol the virtues of the short shifter fixing everything, when really it was just rebuilding the shifter.

I did a huge amount of work on a 535is and it had a completely hacked together shifter. The owner was not pleased and was insistent on stock. Unfortunately with so much welding, so many of the pieces were damaged and good replacements were tough to find so I ordered all of the parts except the shifter arm (later car) brand new. Lever, selector rod, everything. I did not omit one piece when I put it together and damn, if it wasn't the best shifter you've ever felt. It made believers out of the staunchest of short shifter acolytes. The smoothness going between the gears was nothing short of amazing. Even made me a believer. Costs were high with the new parts (over $800), so I was trying to say, "hey we could go AutoSolutions for half of that," but he insisited and I'm glad he did.

i’m using the one @halboyles makes for my 265…

Exact same setup I have on mine. Well, after the initial setup let loose in Pittsburgh, and I had to pull up on the shifter for every shift on the trip back to Washington DC.

Hi Guys
Can I ask , when fitting the 265 obviously you need the correct shifter platform, can you then swap everything else from the 4 speed 262 onto it , ie gear lever , bell housing and shift linkage.
Just asking as the 265 I bought came without a shit platform, bel housing , linkages or shift lever .
Also What would one expect to pay to buy a 265 shift platform ??

You need a horizontal shift rod and the lower shift lever for a 265, 4 speed is totally different.

Contact @halboyles as he is making shift platforms.
There are several posts about 5 speed swaps.

Okay
I spotted a second hand mount for sale online but it doesn’t have a shift lever and I was hoping my 4 speed shift lever would fit .
Oh well, I’ll have to keep looking
Thanks for the info.

The 4-speed lever is bent more aggressively than the 5-speed, so the knob will sit further back. It's driveable, but not correct.

I like Hal's design using the nylon cup from the aluminum shifter consoles. Much more robust design. Will be easier for all you people that like your short shifters. I put a 265 in my old E12 530i years ago and someone had modified the console to use that. Was pretty slick.
