Golf Yellow CSi on BAT - NMNA

You need to go through your car and fix the many small problems to get a top price.

missing body plug, wrong battery hold down, negative battery ground, double nutted bolt, wrong colored wiring, wrong color air box, door brake pin falling out, Wrong hose clamps, wrong hardware, green wire going to ground, wrong electrical boots, extra rubber seals that don’t belong on car, incomplete tool kit, worn dipstick, 2 VIN plates, damaged air box, wrong cold air tube, miss-matched springs, worn battery cable, missing Jack and tool. And more.

Do you have another picture of your head without the valve cover on and the engine harness out of the way? In the picture you show on BAT it appears your oil bar may be on backwards. Did you verify the arrow was pointing to the front of the engine?

Thanks for the insights @sfdon
If I may ask, what component to you refer to when you say body plug? Im thinking of the plug in the floors, but those are present?
The mismatched springs were a result of me forgetting the 2nd one when going to vapor hone, so one got done, not the other. Stupid, but I didn't have the opportunity to make it back, my honing guy is an hour into the middle of nowhere.

I will pop the valve cover and verify the oil spray bar ASAP. I was pretty sure I installed it correctly, but now I am second guessing.

I have to say I am pretty surprised by the outcome. $5k less than previously bid to after making the car better(I think?)
Honestly pretty disappointing, I know time of year isn’t ideal but every other coupe relist had been trending at about 10% higher than previous listings and even coupes sold last week( white CSI for example selling $14k higher) prove to me its not just time of the year.
I cant help but think Golf yellow really is undesirable, unless a CSL. I know this car isn’t a show-stopping restoration, or an all original survivor but IMHO it is a nice example. I expected it to get into the 80s like the other CSIs. I know the first auctions photos really didn’t portray the car attractively but I thought the pictures this time did a better job with the color.

I would love to hear other members thoughts!

Im in contact with the high bidder and will actually be meeting with them in person in PHX for car week to work a deal. Per our phone call they are “pretty sure we will come to an agreement” so we will see. Will update the group!

Regardless of the results today I really enjoyed wrenching on this car and further learning the ins and outs of the E9, at least in a more mechanical sense. Learned a lot about Djet as well. Ultimately the engine/ trans work came from a passion and OCD standpoint, but I figured it couldn’t hurt the value. I am glad I did the work, regardless of outcome. DIY and having a lot of the parts on hand from my E12 hoarding kept the cost fair as well.

Hi Josh,

Just wanted to add some comments or suggestions. First, I think I have seen you car several times in person in the past but not completely sure. Peter Salzmann (Peter's Hobby Shop) sold one very similar to your car here in Wilsonville Oregon a few years ago. He acquired it from someone in Lake Oswego Oregon, when he got the car it was more aggressive looking with staggered period Rial wheels and several different period correct enhancements. When he finally sold the car, the new owner wanted a completely stock appearance. I thought it looked way better before it was brought back to stock.

Gulf is a bold color. As you mentioned, it might fit a CSL better. I think what is holding your car back is it's too stock looking for that color. The car needs to be as bold as its color. Imagine your car lowered a little with staggered Alpinas (or BBS RSs), black CSL style stripes, and a Petri wheel. It really could bring your car to a completely new level.

Just my thoughts.

Hey Vince,
It couldn’t be the same car because I imported this in ‘23 and it hasn’t left my hands since! Must be yet another golf in the mix.

But regarding your thoughts, I couldn’t agree more. I think you are spot on, Ive thought the same, that it could use some modifications to back the bold color. Wider wheels and lower stance alone would do wonders for it.
Really the hardest part is finding 16” appropriate wheels for it!

This may be something I definitely consider moving forward

if you remove those 4 head bolts, make absolute sure you clean out those bore holes so that no oil remains. Absolutely no oil.
failure to do so will hydraulically crack your block and make it worthless.

simply take a 90* pick and find the oil holes on the bottom of the bar.
those holes need to be directly above the middle of the two cam lobes.
if not in the middle you are oiling 6 lobes too much and 6 lobes not enough
