Got tires?

I pulled the trigger on a set of the Vredestein Sprint Classic after seeing the tires on my car are now over 15 years old and after reading the tire write up on their website.

The Vredestein Sprint Classic was specially developed for enthusiasts with an eye for detail and design. While the unique tire profile and contour remain unchanged, a stylish sidewall marking has been added. However, beneath all the classical exterior lies the most advanced and modern technology.

Advanced tyre technology - Ultra-safe : Up-to-date comfort : Suitable for speeds up to 149 mph

Sophisticated tread compound - Shorter breaking distance

Specially designed innerliner - Minimum air loss

I found a set of the 205/70r14's in stock and delivered to my door step in NorCal for $995.

Stan, I will post my opinion regarding the new V Sprint tires but like I said in my previous post my current tires are actually a scary 14 years old (date coded L040401) that still have a lot tread left (8/32") on them.

The current ones are Falken ZE-502's in the 225/60/R14 size that are totally dried out and hard with visible cracking on the sidewalls. These old tires may have been a good tire back in its day and have provided a ton of meaty rubber on the pavement but they have me worrying about which day they will blowout.

So I am sure the new ones will be light years better in direct comparison. The delivery of the new ones is scheduled for next Friday.

If you look closely you can see the cracking lines in the rubber. Would anyone drive at speed on these?

Have a great weekend!

Pushing the reset button

Lets make the following assumptions.

The car is driven about 2000 miles a year (if 1700 are consumed on the way to the Vintage)

The car is drive at or below 80 mph with excursions up to 90 but not sustained.

The car will not see any track time.

If 225/60 14 tires are not available or not available in a brand I like then I will use 195/70 14 on Alpina 14 x 7" rims.

That being said, I would like tires that perform under those conditions and look correct on the coupe.

Kumho, Yokohama, Vredestein
or BFG in 225/60 14 turned black side out....

Stan, my new set of 205/70-14 V Sprint tires arrived yesterday and today I got them mounted. I am happy to report that they not only have that period correct look to them but I like the overall ride as well.

After tweaking with the tire pressure (35lb front and 33lb back) I have to say the ride and handling are very very good compared to my previous 14 year old tires.

Now I won't be driving in fear when attending any of the NorCal road rallies!
