I drive it on and off during the summer, but recently we had a big, quick downpour and a stream of water ran down the hill where the car was parked. After it stopped raining, I started the car, but the car wouldn't get out of the hole that the flood created. I called the local tow guy, who carefully pulled the car out and moved it to a safer spot. A few days later when I tried to start the car, the two idiot lights came but then nothing. Not even a clunk or click. I doubt anything got wet, since the water was only a couple inches deep. The battery is almost new and the ignition switch was replaced several years ago.

I opened the hood and pulled the air cleaner assembly to look at the starter and solenoid. All I could see was a dangling female spade connector (red/black) and a male spade at six o'clock on the solenoid (see attached photo).

If that's the issue, I'll have at it, but it's in a tight space as you all know, so I may not be able to get it connected. I have the 2 volume BMW OEM hardcopy shop manual.

Immediately tape up or connect the black/red wire.
Do not run the car with it loose.
Thanks, I already wrapped it electrical tape. From the wiring diagram, it connects the coil to the starter solenoid. If anyone is interested, the selected snippets of the wiring diagram are attached. The starter switch is #62, the coil is #23, the battery is #17 and the starter is #27.
