Pulled from a '78 528 so going to clean and beadblast then find a carb for it to go into the 2800...and read up what modifications I'm gonna need to do.

IMG_5373.JPG They also use that on BMW marine engine b190. You could probably get a quadrajet to work. check over on mye28

Or here is a link for grins

I dunno why I find this intriguing, probably due to my love of small block chevies, but here is Marty roach from senior six on 4 barrel conversion

http://www.seniorsix.org/faq/2_4bblconv.html

In brief here is his summary quote"
Getting fuel into the Big Six motor, ranked from best to worst:
  • timed / multi-point fuel injection with optimization capabilities ' Motronic
  • multi-point fuel injection: L-Jet, D-jet
  • triple sidedraft carburetors (3 x 2 barrels)
  • twin carburetors (Weber 32/36's)
  • single four barrel (Solex 4A1, Holley, Quadrajet)
Put simply, it's always better to have a dedicated source of metered and timed fuel for each individual cylinder. Depending how you drive and your budget, you can be happy with one of the lesser alternatives. I chose a four barrel carburetor versus the others and I am satisfied.

End quote

Thanks for the responses. I'll pinpoint which carb exactly to get as the engine is a 2.8. I'll find a solvent cleaning tub and get to cleaning it up!

Marty was really into these, I have an intake and the immense-looking, ungainly carb that came on it...probably from some almost-third-world market. Most of what I remember about carb flow rate cannot possibly apply if that think is the proper carb for a 628 or 630. Keep us informed, I may dig that thing out and try to match you step-for-step as an exercise in time (mis)management ! :)

I also own a manifold like this. I've entertained installing it but had suspicions on clearance with the brake booster. Plus I just got the zeniths dialed in. I believe the manifold is a spreadbore. Most buy a spreadbore to squarebore adapter and run modern carbs in the 400cfm range. Cheaper and easier to find. If possible find the original solex.

maybe there’s another alternative - EFI. I’ve thought about using a FiTech 4bbl EFI system on the 4bbl manifold but just can’t get over the looks of the manifold and air filter housing.
